Maths Curriculum Evening Supporting Parents May 2017

Maths is an important life skill. At Woodlands, we want our children to be confident mathematicians who are able to use and apply their learning and to understand that it is fine to make mistakes along the way.

The new National Curriculum aims to ensure that pupils: to gain a deeper understanding become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics- instant recall, patterns and variations. Children need to know their, for example, number bonds, times tables, place value reason mathematically, for example, an odd + an odd = even. Is this always, sometimes or never true? 3 sixths is the same as a half can solve problems by applying their mathematics to gain a deeper understanding

Numbers bonds to 20  19+1; 18+2; 17 + 3 Number bonds to 10 eg, 10 + 0 = 10, 9+ 1 = 10…. Addition facts for numbers up to 10 6+0=6; 5+1=6; 4+2=6… Numbers bonds to 20  19+1; 18+2; 17 + 3 All addition facts to 11, 12 , 13 …20 Multiples of 10 and multiples of 5 which add up to 100… 70 + 30, 45 + 55 etc Doubles and near doubles 6 + 6 = 12, 6 + 7 = 13, 6 + 5 = 11 35 + 35 = 70, 35 + 36 = 71 etc Place value- What is the number made up of? How many tens? How many units?

Principal focus in each phase: EYFS: Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20. Key Stage 1: Pupils develop confidence and mental fluency with whole numbers, counting and place value. Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3 & 4): Pupils become increasingly fluent with whole numbers and the four operations. Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5 & 6): Pupils extend their understanding of the number system , place value and the four operations to include larger integers.

Our aim this evening: •Give you an understanding of how maths, particularly the 4 operations (+, -, ×, ÷) are taught within school. •To provide you with an idea of the expectations placed on children within each year group in maths. •To provide you with ideas, strategies and resources that you can use to support your child at home.

Workshops: Year 1/Year 2 – Introduction to the 4 operations (informal methods) ( Y2 classroom 19 and Y1 classroom 20) Year 3/ Year 4 - Moving form mental/ less formal to the more formal written methods ( Y3 classroom 12 and Y4 classroom 15) Year 5/Year 6 - Formal written methods within the 4 operations (Y5 classroom 17 and Y6 classroom 21)
