SATs Presentation 2017

Unfortunately the software we used for the presentation (Lynx software) we were unable to use on the website. I have uploaded a Powerpoint version that has everything discussed apart from examples of questions. These can be found on the internet.

Aims of the session To let you know about the changes to the KS2 testing arrangements. To let you know about some of the content on the new papers. To give you the opportunity to see some of the questions To give you ideas about how you can support your child at home.

SATs Week Monday 8th May In the summer term of 2016, children in Year 6 will be the second year group to take the new SATs papers. These tests in English and mathematics will reflect the new national curriculum.

At the end of Year 6, children will sit tests in: • Reading • Spelling, punctuation and grammar • Maths These tests will be both set and marked externally, and the results will be used to measure the school’s performance (for example, through reporting to Ofsted and published league tables).

SATs timetable SATs timetable Monday 8th May Reading Tuesday 9th May Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Wednesday 10th May Maths Paper 1 (Arithmetic), Maths Paper 2 (Reasoning) Thursday 11th May Maths Paper 3 (Reasoning)

Reading Three to four separate texts on any subject, with an emphasis on fiction Each section has a list of questions to answer There are 4 main types of questions on the reading paper: literal, deductive, inferential and authorial intent.

How best can you support your child in reading? Ensure your child reads every night Encourage them to read fiction and non-fiction Try to ask them questions about the text Help them with the different skills of reading - especially ‘skim’ reading, where they are looking for key words in the text Build their reading stamina Reading ‘classic’ texts

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) The grammar, punctuation and spelling test will consist of two parts: a grammar and punctuation paper requiring short answers and lasting 45 minutes, and a spelling test of 20 words, lasting around 15 minutes.

New content in the SPaG test Present perfect tense Subjunctive Determiners Past progressive tense Sub-ordinating and co-ordinating conjunctions

How best can you support your child with SPaG? Again, reading a variety of texts – the more children read, the more familiar they become with different text types Spelling homework – this focuses on spelling lists/rules Encouraging your child to complete all homework and discussing their work with them.

Maths Children will sit three papers in maths: Paper 1: arithmetic, 30 minutes Children have to answer calculations Papers 2 and 3: mathematical fluency, solving problems and reasoning, 40 minutes per paper Children will answer a number of question types, including multiple choice, true or false, constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart, and less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem.

New content in the Maths papers Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. Using BIDMAS Using formal methods for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. Roman Numerals

How best can you support your child with maths? Basics – tables, place value, four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), estimating answers, maths vocabulary, problem solving Encourage careful reading of questions and checking of answers in homework Booster classes – for those children whom we feel need a little extra help to achieve the next level Revision websites, revision books, maths games

Writing Writing composition will be subject to teacher assessment.

Science Not all children in Year 6 will take science SATs – a number of schools will be required to take part in science sampling. This will take place in June and we will let you know if Etchells Primary School is selected.

Booster Classes Booster classes have been running since the beginning of the Spring Term. There are three sessions that are currently taking place: Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling, Reading and Mathematics. Pupils who have been invited are those considered to be just under national expectations or just under exceeding national expectations.

Home support The best help is interest taken in learning and progress. Supporting homework. Good communication between the school and home. Getting a good sleep on a school night! Make sure that mobile devices are not in a child’s bedroom at least one hour before going to sleep. Ensuring attendance at school from now until SATs every day. A healthy breakfast.

Using Past SATs papers All of the SATs papers that have been used before are available online for free. Past SATs papers from before 2016 are based on the old curriculum but may still be useful. For example: http://primarytools.co.uk/pages/pastpapers.html

Revision Guides Rising Stars – Reading, Writing and Maths (Some apps are available too). CGP

During SATs week: Please ensure that your child is in school every day during SATs week. Ensure that they are in school on time Please don’t book anything during school time where possible, e.g. doctor’s appointments, holidays, etc. If your child is ill, let us know immediately.

Scores The existing national curriculum levels have been scrapped, and instead children will be given scaled scores.
