URBAN ISSUES IN M.E.D.C’s: HOUSING & RE-DEVELOPMENT

Objectives: Be able to give reasons for the increasing demand for housing in the UK Be able to provide examples of the ways of meeting this need in the different zones of a city Use London’s Docklands as an example of Inner City REGENERATION

Why do we need more houses???? SOME REASONS!!!!!! People are living longer People are marrying later Migration to the UK by EU residents SOME SOLUTIONS????? Build on a GREENFIELD site? Build on a BROWNFIELD site?

Greenfield sites? What are they? Where are they? Any issues? The Government aims to ensure that 60% of developments are on Brownfield sites as this is more sustainable, encourages urban regeneration and limits the effect of urban sprawl. URBAN SPRAWL = the increasing spread of buildings, usually houses, into the countryside. Often one town merges into another GREENFIELD SITE is on the RUF

In each Urban Zone different strategies are used to meet the housing demand.

THE CBD WAY….. Large existing buildings are often subdivided to increase the number of living spaces and residents. Unused areas above shops have been converted into residential spaces.

The Inner City way…..recognise anywhere???? Renovating and updating outdated terraced housing Demolishing old tenements & outdated properties and replacing with modern town housing. Derelict and run down industrial buildings have been converted into modern apartments; for young professionals working in the CBD.

In the SUBURBS……..where is this?? New housing estates, but….. increasing Government initiatives require building firms to: provide a range of housing options including affordable housing.

PRACTICE QUESTIONS 1. Why is demand for housing increasing in the UK? (4 mark) Explain strategies used to meet the housing demand in the UK. (4 marks) What do the letters RUF stand for? Which solution do you prefer and why?
