You, Me, and Healthcare By: Vivian Watson

Objectives Identify successful leadership behaviors in Healthcare Describe an Action plan for a Healthcare provider Discuss “Power Tools” for healthcare personnel Define a Championship Team

Do you believe life is worth preserving? Do you believe life is worth living? “Life is a splendid gift, there is nothing small about it”-Florence Nightingale

Our Spirit of Purpose Anything that drives you to do what you do We create a purpose and we live out that purpose, or we create a default and live by that default We are in the ditch of our lives

You and I have created a purpose. We are in Healthcare You and I have created a purpose. We are in Healthcare. Serving our fellow man

Purpose as Healthcare Professionals: To minister to the needy To restore hope and health To radiate love and respect for life

Staying out of “the ditch” Values- that reflect our Integrity Beliefs- that are worth defending Attitudes-That do not offend Love- Our #1 Value

Love shapes our spirit of purpose Love is the meaning, the joy, of our lives Love glorifies our mind Love: the #1 value by which we live

Our Goals should be: Personal and Professional Trustworthy- Act with Integrity High Achievers- We strive for excellence Value Others- We must learn to except other as they are, not what we think they should be.

Serving others That is our purpose here in healthcare We should be: A consummate Teacher Mentor Role models

Leaders Today Must use the “Shoe Leather” approach We are all leaders in Healthcare We are born Champions. Have that mindset, buy into that.

Avoid: Self Serving Self Promoting Self Interest

It is our Character that defines who we are It is our Character that defines who we are. Our Character comes from our heart

Inspiration A define imparting of knowledge A stimulating of our spirit It’s the only plausible explanation for the exquisite work we do daily It encourages each of us to stay strong, to cheer each other on, and to excel

As we live and prosper here on Earth, we MUST not die not knowing who we are, Why we are.

Recognize the Heart We chose Healthcare; we are bound together as a team by our purpose Helping others is rewarding Our patients rely on our expertise and caring

Taking Care of Others Compassion- Keeps us strong Character- Gives us energy It sets us apart It defines who we are It is a trait, a virtue, a uniqueness

Taking Care of Others We are bona fide strong, enduring, honest, and true to our heart and character We are trustworthy and dependable

Action Plan for Healthcare Professionals Establish harmony in what we offer in Healthcare and what the consumer want Restore consumer confidence in our ability to meet their needs Rid ourselves of entrenched and habitual personnel and leaders who cannot adjust to radical change Promote higher standards of discipline, quality, and conduct

Action Plan cont… 5. Tap into hidden talents and unexpressed energy 6. Network on a continuous basis 7. Hold steadfast to high values 8. Remember always: Community Health prevention is our future

Whatever it takes to get the job done well for the patient MUST and should done.

How? Build a Championship Team Our future will be a reflection of our teamwork

Commander of Your Team Your responsibility should be: Personal, Challenging, and heart felt

It should: Have innovative ideas Compelling (put the hospital, your unit first) Compassionate Passionate thoughts (We are worthy to succeed, we are wonderfully made)

Be a courageous leader (Stand Tall) Have a cause Improving patient care Meeting needs of the staff

Fact: There is no such thing as a job without a future Whether it’s great or small will depend on you

Fact: Our heart is willing to serve from a place of fullness and power, not emptiness We use deed to show others how much we care To feel, to touch, to be touched brings us inner peace

Direct Your Team Toward Improvements Respect the input of all team members We must direct our attention to: The situation The context The assessment The recommendations Check back This builds a Championship Team

Someone once said, “When choosing a team, I choose people who want to win. If I cant find these, I choose people who hate to loose”

We Can Provide: Service (safety, physician, claims) Quality (outcomes, delays) People (personnel retention, rewards) Finance (cash flow, income) Growth (higher volumes, physician participation)

We Want Excellence (constant focus) Community involvement We can do exceptional things if we are inspired to do so

Remember: The human touch is our most important product in Healthcare Touch a Life, Make a difference

Goals in Life Strive for: Self-Respect Self Esteem Fulfillment Enjoyment Inner Peace

Being a Healthcare Professional means you will never be bored. You will always be frustrated. You will be surrounded by challenges, so much to do, so little time. You will carry immense responsibility and very little authority. You will step into people’s lives, and you will make a difference. Some will bless you, some will curse you. You will see people at their worst, and at their best. You will never cease to be amazed at people’s capacity for love, courage and endurance. You will see life begin, and end. You will experience resounding triumphs, and devastating failures. You will cry a lot, you will laugh a lot. You will know what it means to be human and humane Melodie Chenevert

“He will keep in perfect peace all who mind is stayed on Him” The Holy Bible tells us, “He will keep in perfect peace all who mind is stayed on Him”

“The Present” by Spencer Johnson tells us “We are the precious present. This is our time here on planet Earth. We must keep peace for us and others.
