Leading Partnership for the Reading Challenge Title Leading Partnership for the Reading Challenge

Goals of the Reading Challenge We were looking for a new way of encouraging students to engage in the enjoyment of reading We wanted to encourage students to use the library We needed a simple and effective tool to build local partnerships

The Reading Challenge To encourage students to pick six reads of their own choice To record their reading in a diary To motivate students to visit the local County Library

the learning leadership Adaptation of the programme to suit our limited resources Development of a partnership with Kerry ETB and Kerry County Library (local level initially) Encourage tutors to engage their students in The Reading Challenge Fostering of more effective collaboration within the team at Killarney ABE Centre Encourage other local ABE centres to use the programme

The learning innovation Engaged students in the enjoyment of reading often for the first time Supported skills development and progression to other learning programmes The Reading Challenge is an holistic programme that provides students with opportunities for accreditation if they wish Some students have achieved QQI Level 2 – Reading (M2CO1) and Writing (M2CO2) Awards

Learning Differences Reading independently Using the library – reading as a hobby and intergenerational learning Improved communication skills – learners expressing their opinion about a piece of reading Understanding the different media using text The satisfaction apparent when the diaries are complete

Link to FET Strategy Social inclusion and reducing isolation Physical and mental health benefits Building knowledge, skills and competence that may support student progression Civic Participation
