Welcome to RHHS

RHHS Math Department You can find us on the web at www.rhhsmath.ca Extra help is available Monday – Thursday 3:30 – 4:20PM Math Contests Math Club Go to website and show students what is there Show charts for pathways

Grade 9 Streams Essentials Applied Your current teachers will recommend this level if they feel it is appropriate Applied You are calculator dependent You need to have concrete steps repeated multiple times Need a lot of extra guidance or one-on-one assistance

Grade 9 Streams Academic You are not calculator dependent Do homework regularly More independent Willing to take risks (try to solve questions even if they seem difficult or use strategies such as reviewing examples and asking friends if you don’t understand the question) Can figure out where made mistakes and can correct them

Grade 9 Streams Gifted You are identified as gifted or are enriched You enjoy and appreciate mathematics You are interested in the subject and not just good at it There are two units which you are not allowed to use calculators (this shouldn’t scare you) If you are identified as gifted there will be space for you and always some space for those that are enriched

Sample Lesson Fractions Recall To add or subtract fractions you need to have a common denominator To multiply fractions you need to multiply the numerators and the denominators To divide you need to multiply by the reciprocal Need to reduce all answers to simplest form Note: Students may not have reviewed this yet in grade 8, but asking them to do what they can remember and try

Examples Find the sum or difference

Examples Multiply or Divide

Your Turn to Try Solve the following and express your answer in reduced form. Remember BEDMAS! Have prefects hand out writing utensils and scrap paper Ask all students to answer the first fraction and then move on if they feel like it (all questions from the academic course pack) Have prefects wonder around class and assist students Take up the answers [#1: -7/15, #2: -1/5, #3: 14/3] If at the end of grade 8 you looked at this same mini lesson you might be... ...Applied if you really struggled with following the examples provided, need a calculator to solve, or would need a week to really review and practice. ...Gifted or Enriched if you are rolling your eyes and want more of a challenge. Would already be attempting the questions if you say them while the explanation was going on. Or can find a faster way to solve each. ...Academic if you fall somewhere in between. May need some review and have a little trouble but after a couple of days you would get it back.

Questions If no questions have prefects talk about their experience with math and give any words of advice/wisdom.

Thank you for coming and enjoy your day
