What is Bullying? Verbal Physical Emotional or Exclusion Cyber Is where you are deliberately and constantly saying things to someone to make them upset or scared. Name calling Threats Lies or nasty stories Physical Is where you physically hurt someone regularly -   Hitting Pushing or Punching them What is Bullying? Emotional or Exclusion Is where you deliberately say or do something to someone to make them upset. Making fun of someone Leaving someone out on purpose Making threatening gestures Cyber Is using the Internet or mobile phone to repeatedly send information designed to make someone upset or scared. Text messaging Video – posting on line Facebook and other chatrooms email

Why do Children Bully? It seems like fun Boredom To get what they want To be popular and admired Afraid of being the one left out Jealousy of others It seems like fun Boredom It has worked for them before They think it gives them power They see it as their role as leader Their significant role models bully

People who bully can be divided into 2 areas: Those who do or lead the bullying; Those who encourage or stand and watch These people are known as BYSTANDERS. In your groups, write down the types of things which you think bystanders do which contribute to a bullying situation.

Bystanders Supporters Spectators Witnesses Are involved in 85% of bullying incidents in the classroom They can actively participate They can simply be onlookers They are also present during most bullying incidents in the playground Bystanders Support the person bullying, either by helping the child to bully the other person or by encouraging the person who is bullying. Bystanders can be positive if they: Choose to protect the person being bullied, or; Choose to try and help the bully change their behaviour Supporters Spectators Witnesses Gather or deliberately stay to watch the incident – sometimes from concern and sometimes from enjoyment. Are aware that the incident is occurring (know about the bullying) or see it from a distance.

Students can deliberately support bullying by: Verbally encouraging the bullying behaviour Preventing the student who is being bullied from leaving the situation Shielding the situation from the view of people who can help Acting as lookout or warning the bully when help is approaching Assisting the student to bully by holding the victim or their possessions Acting as a messenger for students who are bullying Laughing or smiling at the bullying Refusing to provide information about the incident when asked

Students can support bullying without realising by: Ignoring or remaining silent about bullying behaviour Continuing to avoid or exclude the victim Being friendly to the person bullying and not criticising their behaviour. Gossiping about what has happened

Ask a teacher or someone else for help What Else Can Bystanders Do? Ask a teacher or someone else for help Tell the person they are bullying Refuse to join the bullying and walk away TELL SOMEONE!! Remember, if you are a bystander and report incidents of bullying. What you say is CONFIDENTIAL. NO-ONE needs to know you have spoken to an adult unless you wish them to.

The main thing to remember is that we all have CHOICES. We choose what we are going to SAY and how we are going to TREAT SOMEONE. We also choose how we are going to ACT and BEHAVE in situations. As a bystander you always have options other than participating in a bullying situation.

Asking for help is when someone feels the situation is out of their control and they are unable to deal with it alone and need help. Asking for help is ALWAYS OKAY!! If anyone sees someone BEING BULLIED they should also ASK FOR HELP.

YOU MUST TELL SOMEONE!! How to ask for Help If you are being bullied ask someone to get a teacher immediately. If you are watching, get a teacher immediately. If it is after the incident, tell a teacher. If you do not wish to tell a teacher, tell a friend. If you are the friend, tell a teacher. If you do not feel comfortable telling anyone at school, tell your parents. If you are the parents, notify the school as soon as possible. YOU MUST TELL SOMEONE!!

WHAT DO I DO? Do I – Yell/scream/fight back? Get aggressive? Start crying? Hide it from everyone? Or is there another option? YES!!! TELL SOMEONE! You can then fill out the form so the teachers can help fix the situation.
