How to use this presentation 1/26/2018 Length 60 Min – can be customized based on presenter preference Key Message Security continues to be rated as a top priority for IT. This is no surprise as major companies and government agencies are publicly criticized for being hacked and failing to protect themselves and their customer and employee personal information. At the same time, attackers are using readily available tools to infiltrate large organizations and remain undetected for a long period of time while conducting exfiltration of secrets or attacking the infrastructure and making ransom demands. Windows Server 2016 delivers new layers of protection that help address these emerging threats so that the server becomes an active component in your security defenses. These security protections were built with the mindset of how we deal with the overall threat of ongoing attacks inside the datacenter environment and range from threat resistance and enhanced detection to managing privileged identity and protecting virtual machines from a compromised fabric Target Audience IT Pro, ITDM, CxO Demos Storage Spaces Direct https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raeUiNtMk0E Preparation Resources Mechanics video: https://youtu.be/k1ElKuyZPJg © 2015 Microsoft Corporation. Faster return with less effort with Windows Server 2016 software-defined storage

Challenges customers face Move faster “Data volume grows faster than anything in my datacenter, and I have to be able to move faster than it does. Scaling current storage systems takes a lot of time and energy.” Reduce cost “Cost structure is too high for purchasing and maintaining SAN and NAS arrays.” Gain flexibility “I want to assign storage for each application based on priority and budget.”  Trends impacting customer decisions: Data volume growing at 40% or more, will reach 44 zettabytes by 2020. More than 65 percent of enterprise IT organizations will commit to hybrid cloud technologies before 2016. Public IT cloud services spending will reach $56.6 billion in 2014 and grow to more than $127 billion in 2018. Cloud fabric storage features to meet customer challenges: [SPEED, COST] Resilient and Diagnosable VM Storage resiliency – Preserve tenant VM session state in the event of transient storage disruption Storage health monitoring – One place to look for all storage health events [COST, SPEED, FLEXIBILITY] Efficient at Cloud Scale File System – ReFS delivers highest levels of scale and resiliency for virtualization Deduplication –Scale-out optimized for lowest $ per GB Multi-tenant Control and Security Storage Quality of Service – QoS control and manage noisy neighbors SMB Security – Pre-authentication integrity to prevent tampering & man-in-the-middle attacks [FLEXIBILITY, SPEED] Cloud Consistency and Availability Blob storage – Run cloud born apps on-premises or in Azure Rolling upgrades – Cloud design points for no downtime upgrades

“ We’re moving towards a world where we don’t need to know where our data is—on-premises or in the cloud. The combination of Storage Spaces Direct, Hyper-V, scale-out flash storage, and SMB3 allows us to focus on functionality rather than location. With Windows Server 2016, migration is no longer a project, just a task. “ Ulf Preisler IT Director Danske Fragtmænd

Opportunity to rethink your datacenter Think services, not servers 1/26/2018 1:11 AM Opportunity to rethink your datacenter Think services, not servers Traditional datacenter Tight coupling between infrastructure and apps Expensive, vertically integrated hardware Siloed infrastructure and operations Highly customized processes and configurations Cloud model Loosely coupled apps and micro-services Industry-standard hardware Service-focused DevOps Standardized processes and configurations © 2013 Microsoft Corporation. Storage Quality of Service (QoS) for efficiency 1/26/2018 Storage Quality of Service (QoS) for efficiency Control and monitor storage performance Simple out of box behavior Enabled by default for Scale-Out File Server (SOFS) Automatic metrics (normalized IOPs latency) per VM & VHD Scale-out File Server Cluster Hyper-V Cluster Virtual Machines I/O Sched Policy Manager Rate Limiters SMB3 Storage Network Fabric Flexible and customizable Policy per VHD, VM, Service, or Tenant Define minimum and maximum IOPs Fair distribution within policy Prioritize storage resources for critical apps With Storage Quality of Service, administrators can centrally manage and monitor storage performance and control workload access to storage resources. In this way, critical workloads can receive higher-priority access to storage resources. Policies define storage I/O minimums and maximums for virtual machines and ensure they are met, providing consistent performance across VMs. Management System Center VMM and Ops Manager PowerShell built-in for Hyper-V and SoFS © 2015 Microsoft Corporation. Converged solution On-premises disaggregated solution Hyper-converged Scale compute, storage simultaneously Virtual machines on Hyper-V host Virtual Machines SMB3 Storage Software Scale-out file server Scale-out file server Storage Software Storage Software Many customers increasingly want to achieve the economic and simplification benefits of hyper-converged infrastructure, which brings together storage and compute on lower-cost hardware. Large-scale private and hosted clouds, on the other hand, typically prefer the flexibility to scale compute and storage independently. Windows Server software-defined storage enables both models for customer flexibility with its Storage Spaces Direct feature. -The disaggregated scenario separates Hyper-V servers from the Storage Spaces Direct servers, enabling scaling of compute separate from storage. -In the hyper-converged scenario shown here, the Hyper-V (compute) and Storage Spaces Direct (storage) components reside on the same cluster to enable simultaneous scaling. Talking points: Microsoft’s on-premises strategy is for a converged / disaggregated architecture running Hyper-V over SMB. That could be either to a 3rd party NAS device, or to a Software-defined Storage solution with a Scale-out File Server as a NAS head which is backed by either Storage Spaces Direct or Storage Spaces with shared JBOD’s. Microsoft is a cloud company and we embrace your choice of storage for your cloud. Be it traditional SAN or NAS, and for those looking to reduce costs we also offer Software-defined Storage solutions. Flexible choices across a breadth of storage Not just bits, but also choice in integrated solutions Reduce storage costs Complete storage options to meet your needs: Industry leading portfolio for on-premises solutions Your choice of design principle Microsoft solutions reduce storage costs Scale components separately in this model. Simultaneous scaling is possible when compute (Hyper-V) and storage components (Storage Spaces Direct) reside on the same cluster.

Converged solution On-premises disaggregated solution Microsoft Ignite 2015 1/26/2018 1:11 AM Converged solution On-premises disaggregated solution Choice: NAS or Software-defined Storage with either shared or shared nothing disks File-based storage: Ethernet / InfiniBand with SMB3 for storage fabric Leverage existing investments: Add existing storage assets to a Software-defined Storage stack Manageability: Entire stack manageable with System Center with any solution Third-party NAS Hyper-V SMB3 storage network fabric System Center SoFS with Storage Spaces Direct SoFS with SAN SoFS with Storage Spaces Shared JBOD Storage Talking points: Microsoft’s on-premises strategy is for a converged / disaggregated architecture running Hyper-V over SMB. Converged solution Scale compute and storage independently Microsoft Ignite 2015 1/26/2018 1:11 AM Converged solution Scale compute and storage independently Flexibility: Compute and storage scale independently Scalability: Ability to scale each layer for the highest demands Manageability: Segments layers to admin roles Hyper-V Cluster Scale-out compute with low cost commodity servers Low cost NIC’s at scale Inexpensive Ethernet for storage fabric SMB3 storage network fabric System Center Talking points: Microsoft believes in having your compute layer be low cost commodity scale-out. It is cost prohibitive to put expensive HBA’s in each compute node, so Microsoft believes in low cost Ethernet or InfiniBand as the storage fabric. Back end storage is NAS, which can be either 3rd party NAS or a Software-defined Storage NAS solution, consisting of a Scale-out File Server as a NAS head which is backed by Storage Spaces and low cost shared JBOD’s Scale-out File Server NAS head Elastic, reliable, optimized with Storage Spaces © 2015 Microsoft Corporation.
