Why tutors and tutoring? A tutor: Offers supplemental support for faculty-driven curriculum Provides a sounding board for students to discuss their academic challenges Guides students toward greater understanding of course material for successful assignment completion Tutoring sessions encourage students to: Participate in question-based dialogue around their work Increase academic engagement through proactive study habits and goal setting Build study skills, including organization and time management, to foster independent learning

What are the benefits of tutoring? Meets various learning styles and student needs Refreshes skill sets from previous classes Offers an opportunity to address questions not asked in class Encourages students to organize, plan ahead, and meet assignment deadlines

How can students sign up? All disciplines now offer tutoring appointments. Appointment-based tutoring may be scheduled for one 50-minute session per course or discipline per day. Schedule online via GradesFirst OR visit the Front Desk OR call 312-850-7473 Drop-ins are welcome, as available Check in at the desk prior to session time All sessions are one-on-one unless: Students form a study group for the same assignment and the tutor agrees to a group session; please request group sessions at the front desk Tutees must have a CCC ID number

What is drop-in tutoring? Drop-in tutoring is non-scheduled, one-on-one tutoring, offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Drop-ins are: Available for all vacant appointment slots at 5 minutes past the hour, in the event of cancellations or “No Shows.” Additionally available in Math for half-hour time slots during “peak” ASC operating hours (generally 10AM-2PM, M-TH). Designed for “quick questions,” as the sessions typically run for less than 1 hour (i.e.: remainder of the vacant appointment hour) or 30 minutes (Math). Matched at the ASC’s front desk in real time only. If necessary, students sign a list and wait in the ASC’s lobby. Students must be present when their names are called to receive drop-in tutoring. Assigned to students with a CCC ID number only.

How can I inform students about tutoring? Add the ASC’s information to your syllabus. (See next slide.) Tour the center with your class. (Email Randi to schedule: rploszaj@ccc.edu) Receive class visits: We’ll bring the ASC to you! 5-minute class visits are scheduled* during Weeks 1-3 (and Weeks 5-6 for dynamic date courses). Each course for which we have a tutor will receive a visit at the start of class during this time period. *If you do not want a visit, email Coordinator Kayley Steuber at ksteuber@ccc.edu by Friday, August 25th. We can’t wait to meet your students!

How can I inform students about tutoring? Sample Syllabus Blurb Academic Support Center: Did you know that students who see a tutor regularly throughout the semester increase their chances of success in their courses? The ASC offers FREE one-on-one tutoring on an appointment basis for a variety of subjects. Drop-ins are also welcome, when available. Stop by the front desk in Room 2301 or login to GradesFirst to request a tutoring session. The ASC is located behind the Library on the second floor, and can also be accessed through Stairwell and Elevator #7 behind the Cafeteria. Hours of Operation are 8:00am to 8:00pm, Monday through Thursday, and 9:00am to 2:00pm, Friday and Saturday. Summer session hours may be slightly reduced. Be sure to also look out for the various workshops and review sessions they host throughout the semester!

How can I integrate tutoring into my curriculum? 1. Incentivize tutoring Offer extra credit Build tutoring participation into course 2. Request an embedded tutor Built-in tutor* for duration of course (Due to limited staffing, this service is limited to Spanish, MOD, Level Up, and select science courses only for FA17.) “On Demand” tutor* for specific drafting, revision, and/or lab date(s) (all disciplines welcome) *Email embedding requests to rploszaj@ccc.edu 3. Promote workshops Topical workshops, scheduled by discipline “On Demand” workshops/ review sessions,** scheduled by your course requirements (in class OR after hours) **Email workshop requests to ksteuber@ccc.edu
