LIV.DAT Training Overview All students will undertake cohort training but can personalise their program All students will receive training in Data Intensive Science All students will develop skills and knowledge relevant to their scientific area All students will have the opportunity to attend skills and career workshops Training will be provided by UoL Department of Physics, UoL Department of Computer Science and LJMU Astrophysics Research Institute Students will undertake placements at partner businesses/research institutions in areas outside their core PhD project (broadening skills, enhancing employability)

University of Liverpool PGR Principles No training is credit bearing (LDC). No training is compulsory (LDC). All Schools will contribute a ‘training offer’ available to wider Faculty / University. Free! No internal fund transfers. Option: 1+3 year structure

MSc Big Data and HPC MSc Big Data and High Performance Computing (HPC) has been running for 3 years Delivered by UoL Department of Computer Science 25 students p.a. Course designed to address skills gap for employment in field of Big Data Works closely with commercial partners

Postgraduate Diploma 120 credits (exit awards PGDip 120, PGCert 60) S1: Big Data Analysis (Comp529) 15 credits. Develop awareness of algorithmic approaches for handling batch and streaming analysis, understanding of middleware to enable algorithms to scale up to analysis of large data sets S2: Data mining (COMP527) 15 credits. Develop a critical awareness of current problems and research issues in data mining and the ability to address data mining research issues in an original manner S2: Multi-core programming (COMP528) 15 credits. S2: Machine Learning and Bioinspired optimisation (COMP532) 15 credits S2: Applied Algorithmics (COMP526) 15 credit S1,2+3: LIVDAT Individual project 60 credits (new module to be defined) subject specific training and first year report, must not go directly into thesis (can’t be rewarded twice). Placement here would be ideal. S1: LIVDAT CDT Winter School and Skills 15 credits (new module to be defined, similar structure to ENGG422),

LIV.DAT CDT Winter School and Skills Data intensive Science seminar series: all students will present their research to physics students registered at UoL and LJMU. Will advertise to UG students. CDT Winter School – annual 3-day winter school, delivering posters and talks in conference format. Keynote speaker in data intensive science from academia and industry. Session on Careers Cohort visit to the STFC Hartree Centre Outreach – Write an STFC small awards scheme proposal for an outreach event in groups (potentially to be presented at the Outreach Symposium in 2019 at the Liverpool Convention Centre)

Discussion Adopt the 1+3 model? Are the COMP modules the most relevant to our students? What programming languages will the students use? What existing programming training opportunities are there, do we need alternatives? What other training can be offered to the students?
