ANCIENT ASTRONOMERS THEIR DISCOVERIES AND THEORIES Wonder.s

ANCIENT ASTRONOMER ARISTOTLE Proved that the earth was a circle Believed that the earth was the center of the universe He thought the earth was the center of the universe because if we were orbiting around the sun wouldn’t the stars shift position though out the year The technology to prove his theories did not exist at the time He believed planets went in a circle around the sun

ANCIENT ASTRONOMER PTOLEMY Ptolemy believed that the earth was in the center of the universe Ptolemy was a doctor, mathematician, geographer and astronomer

ANCIENT ASTRONOMER AL-KHWARIZMI Al-Khwarizmi invented algebra He developed this mathematical device completely in words The formula he created can tell were the sun, moon and planets were positioned in the sky

ANCIENT ASTRONOMER COPERNICUS He began saying that the sun was the center of the universe and that the earth would orbit the sun This revolutionary idea was not popular with the church Other people such as Galileo helped to prove Copernicus was correct This idea was called Heliocentric system He was not the first one to think the sun was the center of the our solar system Starwatchers believed that the sun was in the center of the universe too

ANCIENT ASTRONOMER GALILEO Galileo is a Italian scientist He invented a 30x telescope He saw craters ,mountains and valleys of the moon He noticed huge numbers of stars making up the milky way He discovered that four moons were orbiting Jupiter The four moons orbiting Jupiter are called the Galilean moons because Galileo discovered them and proved that they orbited Jupiter In 1633 Galileo was put under house arrest because of all his new discoveries which frightened the church

The theories of our ancient astronomers and how they changed over time.
