Year 5’s Science Week this half term focused on Space.
In our lessons, we started by thinking about the planets in our solar system and how they moved.
We learnt they orbit around the sun We learnt they orbit around the sun. One full orbit for each planet is how long their year is.
We all pretended to be planets We all pretended to be planets. This is Mercury, it is closest to the Sun and its year is only 88 days!
This is Neptune. It is very far from the Sun (30 This is Neptune. It is very far from the Sun (30.0 AU) and 1 of its years is 165 Earth years! It took a long time for Neptune to orbit around Miss Rowland (the sun).
In our week we also learnt that the moon moves around Earth (this takes about a month) and how we get day and night.
We really enjoyed learning about Space We really enjoyed learning about Space. We chose to do extra learning about it and wanted to do more research for homework!
Finally, Miss Rowland decided to extend our work about Space into Literacy. We will be writing a story about Space for the BBC2 competition ‘500 words.’
