The Byzantine Empire prevented the Roman Empire from trading with the Middle East.

Daily agenda TCAP Practice (Do Now) Renaissance Video Review Starting with a Story (Collaborative Groups) Emergence of the Renaissance PPT

Renaissance Video Review The heart of the Islamic world was Baghdad. The pride of Islam Known for beautiful architecture Drew scholars from all over Islamic Empire Scholars with all different backgrounds started to compete for jobs. The Renaissance had its beginnings in Baghdad.

The scientific process was born in Baghdad as scholars started to investigate mistakes that very intelligent Greek scientists made. This spirit of questioning led to the development of the scientific method. Algebra, trigonometry, engineering, and astronomy trade their roots to Islamic scientists. Muslim physicians developed the idea that diseases were spread through the air, leading to the discovery of germs.

These medical studies were so sophisticated that they were used for 600 years by both Muslim and European physicians. Muslims started using paper to record their findings, which spread all throughout Europe over time. This allowed the Muslim community to spread their knowledge among three continents: Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Starting with a story In your collaborative groups, read the passage provided to you. Discuss answers to the “Reading & Writing” questions at the bottom of p. 427. Be prepared to discuss in whole group.

Emergence of the renaissance Main Ideas: Key events brought an end to the Middle Ages and feudal life. Toward the end of the Middle Ages, trade flourished. This brought new goods and ideas to an increasing number of people. The movement known as humanism stressed the importance of individuals and encouraged human achievement.

A. European society changes What events helped bring an end to feudalism and the Middle Ages? The Rise of Nations Under feudalism, many small kingdoms ruled Europe. That changed when England and France developed as nations in the 1100s and 1200s. As kings gained power, individual lords and landowners lost the power they had under feudalism. As the Middle Ages ended, so did the use of many monasteries across Europe – including this one in Yorkshire, England.

A. European society changes What events helped bring an end to feudalism and the Middle Ages? End of Medieval Institutions Feudalism was also weakened as populations declined in Europe due to war and the Black Death. The Hundred Years’ War between England and France ended chivalry because weapons were developed which could pierce armor from a long distance.

B. The expansion of trade What effect did the reopening of the Silk Roads have on Europe? As the feudal system faded, cities throughout Europe continued to grow. This was due in large part to the expansion of trade and development of a strong merchant (middle) class. The main reason for the growth of trade was a gradual decline in warfare and invasion. As a result, traders once again felt safe to travel long distances.

B. The expansion of trade What effect did the reopening of the Silk Roads have on Europe? The Silk Roads Reopen The most notable example of the return of long- distance trade was the reopening of the Silk Roads. Silk Roads were an ancient trade route that connected Europe to China. After the fall of Rome, many viewed the roads as too dangerous, so they got little use. The rise of the Mongol Empire brought security to the region, which led to an increase in trade in the early 1200s.

B. The expansion of trade What effect did the reopening of the Silk Roads have on Europe? Marco Polo’s Travels In 1271, an Italian trader named Marco Polo started a journey along the route, eventually reaching China. After 24 years, Polo returned to Italy with tales of great riches from Asia. The success of Polo’s journey encouraged European merchants to increase their trade with Asia. This growth of trade opened Europeans up to a host of new goods and ideas.

Exit ticket How did Marco Polo contribute to the growth of European trade? He ended feudalism, which led to the growth of the middle class. He opened the Silk Roads so that more people could trade across continents. He traveled from Italy to China and told about his travels, which encouraged other Europeans to trade with Asia, too. None of the above.
