Was Maryland a success or a failure? Maryland was successful due to its central location, the richness of its lands and its wondrous waterways which lent a bounty of seafood to the diet. It was also successful because mostly all religions were accepted.

When was Maryland established? April 28, 1788

Why was Maryland established? For freedom of religion and the concept of separation of church and state.

Who established Maryland? George Calvert's son, Sir Cecil Calvert, the Second Lord Baltimore, actually established the colony

What did Maryland produce to export and make money? Tobacco, wheat and corn were very important cash crops in Maryland’s economy.

Who made up the colonists? In 1633, settlers left England for a better life. Those settlers consisted of seventeen colonists that were Roman Catholic gentleman and the rest were Protestant indentured servants.

What region did Maryland become associated with? Maryland was associated with the Middle Colonies (Chesapeake Colonies)

A map of Maryland:

What did Maryland’s flag look like? Maryland’s flag has the symbols of the Calvert and Crossland families. Lord Baltimore, who founded Maryland, was a calvert. The Calvert family symbol is gold and black.

Who was Maryland’s founder? Maryland’s Founder was Lord Baltimore the 2nd. (also known as Lord Cecil Calvert)

What was Maryland’s geography and climate like? Maryland is small, yet very diverse. In Maryland, the weather is considerably warmer, which prevents ice from forming over bodies of water. Maryland also borders the chesapeake bay and the forested Appalachian Mountains.

What were the overall religious practices in Maryland? To avoid conflict between branches of Christianity, Maryland passed The Maryland Toleration Act, which let christians of any type worship freely throughout the colony.

What type of food is in Maryland? The people in Maryland ate the food available to them, which happened to be a wide variety including seafood (fish, oysters, crab, etc.) from the Chesapeake Bay. They also had vast areas of farmland where farmers grew corn, wheat, and barley. Hunters regularly caught ducks, geese, turkey, pigeons, and deer,

What was education like in Maryland? Maryland tried to establish schools in the colonial period. In 1685, the state raised taxes to help support funds for these schools, but only one school was actually founded. But by 1723, enough taxed were distributed throughout the 12 counties to have a fully working school system.

What did people do for fun in Maryland? Girls made dolls out of things like corn husks, fabric or other extra materials lying around. Boys played games like tag and hide and seek. A popular party activity in colonial Maryland was bobbing for apples.

Fun facts: Maryland is the location of the Mason-Dixon line. Named after King Charles I’s wife, Henrietta Maria. Their solar energy business is actually larger than their famous crabbing business.
