What is Content Management ? process of capturing, storing, sorting, codifying, integrating, updating and protecting any and all information.

Manual Content Management Create every page by hand using tools such as Dreamweaver or GoLive. COSTS HTML Designers and producers to create pages and link into site. Project Manager to traffic projects. QA Engineer to review every page and link. Design tools and training. FEATURES Low startup costs, other than labor costs. Predictable but significant ongoing costs. Every page takes at least one or two hours to produce. Information architecture can rapidly get out of hand. Ongoing costs are high due to lack of automation. Web team can become a bottleneck. Vacations and sickness can delay changes. Human error easily introduced. Redesigns are difficult because content not separated from presentation.

Content Management Systems FEATURES Content creation delegated to content owners. Workflow allows only authorized editors to manage content. Information architecture kept consistent as content is added. Rapid deployment, typically days to weeks. Costs are predictable, with lower up-front costs. Remote employees can manage content. IT staff can focus on core needs. Templates can be created by HTML designers. Best suited for external Web sites, but can also be used for Intranets.

Benefits of using CMS Publishing and distribution - Support content creation, authorisation, inclusion and distribution Search - Facility to provide access to information items Data Integration - Foundation functionality to access structured and unstructured information from internal and external sources and make it available for display Process Integration – Integrating legacy Enterprise applications Collaboration - Forum for interactions among employees, customers, partners and other stakeholders Personalization - Filter the information and functionality to meet the individual's work style and content preferences Presentation – Consistent data presentation for various platforms and technologies Categorisation - Organisation specific taxonomy to contextualise information to support productive use Notification - Event based reminders, Instant Messaging Administration - Administering and managing the portal environment
