International Community Germany – harsh reparations (pay backs) led to a massive depression Wanted revenge against the Allied Powers Soviet Russia – This new idea of government rule threatened the industrialized world France, Britain, and the Allies – Tired of war; wanted to do anything to avoid conflict

America 1918 – deadly form of influenza traveled the world, killing millions of people Originated in U.S. The Great War, combined with this pandemic, created a sense of doom

America Women Although briefly postponed due to the outbreak of WWI, the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1919 finally allowed women to represent themselves at the polls.

Women America The end of wartime economic opportunities By 1920, fewer women were working than in 1910

America African Americans Huge competition for work against returning white soldiers Race riots rocked cities all over the country

America 1919 Race Riots “Red Summer” – Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Omaha Violent, racially-motivated uprisings In the south, lynchings occurred on a normal basis In the north, whites reacted violently to African Americans arriving by the Great Migration

Inflation – Rising Prices After WWI Americans rushed to buy consumer goods instead of war time products These goods were scarce, but the demand was high Price of farm goods fell sharply, causing farmers to lose their homes and lands

Percent Increase in Cost of Living, 1914-1919

Inflation – Rising Prices Industrial Workers Saw that their current wages were not buying as much as they used to Many strikes between workers and companies occurred Some turned violent – Press blamed the strike leaders

Red Scare Communism – all property is publicly owned. Each person is works and is paid according to their abilities and needs Widespread fear of suspected communists and radicals thought to be plotting revolution within the United States

Red Scare During this period, "alien" residents were targeted and deported The First Amendment rights of Americans were sometimes ignored as the country succumbed to anti- communist hysteria

Red Scare Palmer Raids An offensive against Communist radicals planning to overthrow the American free market system Thousands arrested If these people were immigrants they would often be deported back to their home countries

Red Scare Often these homes were searched illegally

Sacco and Vanzetti Trial Red Scare Sacco and Vanzetti Trial Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were Italian immigrants and anarchists (wanted to put an end government) Charged for killing 2 men in a shoe factory Arrested for “looking Italian” Despite no real evidence, these men are convicted and sentenced to death by the electric chair
