Why switch to Solar?! Cuts your fuel consumption. Solar power is clean free energy. Cuts Carbon Emissions The average house generates over1 tonne of CO2 a year! Cuts your fuel consumption.

Why switch to Solar?! You will save money and carbon!

Why switch to Solar?! You can make money with FIT incentive!

Why switch to Solar?! Increases the energy rating of your property and property value!

Annually utility costs increase radically! Why switch to Solar?! INVESTMENT Solar vs Bank Interest Rate at 0.5% Annually utility costs increase radically!

FACT: Solar panels on your roof, Are a sound investment!

Introduction to the Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) How it Works!

20th Century Carbon was King! Fossil fuels were cheap and plentiful but: 70’s oil crisis 1990’s concerns about global warming 2000’s diminishing reserves of oil and gas

1970’s oil crisis Middle East instability could threaten supply Availability and price of fuel shown to have massive impact on global economy Realisation that countries may have to go to war to protect supplies!

1980’s raised concerns about global warming The global annual mean temperature curve started to rise........ Finally acknowledged in 1988 that the climate was warmer than any period since 1880 ‘The greenhouse effect theory’, was named

1990’s the start of International action 1997 the Kyoto Protocol was negotiated in Kyoto, Japan. Participating countries required to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions (CO2,) by at least 5% or face huge fines!

2000’s where has the oil and gas gone? The UK is now a net and rising importer of oil, gas and coal and is becoming increasingly exposed to competition for supplies from other energy importers which effects cost! The UK prices will continually rise (Circa 400% DTI by 2020!)

Will Nuclear come to the rescue? Don’t hold your breath! Source of graph - UK Departement of Energy and climate change 2009

Will Nuclear come to the rescue? Even if we are prepared to pay the monetary and environmental cost........ Source of graph - UK Departement of Energy and climate change 2009

Will Nuclear come to the rescue? It will be at least 10 years and billions of pounds before any new capacity will come on line! Source of graph - UK Departement of Energy and climate change 2009

Introduction to the FITs FITs legislation Make it Financially viable as option for UK

The need to legislate Cost of microgeneration Price of grid electricity Grid Parity It used to be the cost to generate a kWh of renewable electricity using micro generation is more than it can be sold for on the wholesale energy market making it unattractive. Incentives put in place (FIT) As more people join the micro generation grid, the fit incentive will decrease

How much renewable energy could there be by 2020? Renewable Energy Directive requires UK to generate a large portion of its energy from renewables sources by 2020 Renewable Energy Strategy preferred scenario is 12% Heat and 30% renewable electricity (2% of which will be from domestic sited technologies)

The FITs legislation Energy Act 2008 - Powers for introducing tariffs (heat and power) The Feed-in Tariffs April 2010 Utility suppliers Standard Conditions of Supply Licences

Avoided Cost of Imported Electricity The FITs – how it works Generation Tariff Paid for every kWh Generated Export Tariff Paid for every kWh exported to the grid Avoided Cost of Imported Electricity The value of the generated electricity consumed on site Provides a financial reward over and above the value of the electricity generated Tariffs are set to at a level that provide a positive return on investment

Take a typical home? Annual electricity demand = 4,500 kWh PV System = 2 kWp PV annual generation = 1,700 kWh Generation tariff = 41.3p kWh Export tariff = 3p kWh Cost of imported electricity = 12p kWh

This is the calculation Annual PV production (Generation Tariff) 1,700 kWh x 41.3p = £702.10 Avoid buying electric 50% exported back to electric grid

What does it add up to? Generation Made - £702.10 Export to Grid - £25.50 Saved on Bills - £102.00 Total benefit - £829.60
