LAUNCH OF NATIONAL OBESITY CAMPAIGN

At the 2016 Conference challenge laid down by CMO Discussions with potential Partners Paper sent to Scottish Government December 2016 MEETING DR DAVID CAESAR Campaign agreed and timings clarified Background

Scotland’s population is 5.295 million. there are 1,767,864 obese people in Scotland in the 16-64 age range. 260,000 school aged pupils are overweight in Scotland Scotland is the second most obese nation in the world!

obesity could be costing Scotland up to £4.6bn a year according to 2013 figures, almost two thirds of adults were overweight, with 27.1% classed as being obese. The government has described obesity as one of Scotland's next big health challenges Background

The core idea for the campaign is to encourage teenagers and parents to do a small change or to take part in a small activity that will hopefully create an incremental change Ultimately the goal is to SLOWLY HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE culture of the nation CAMPAGN IDEA

This is a campaign aimed at reducing obesity amongst the population of Scotland.

‘Inch By Inch For Scotland’ will challenge pupils and parents alike to take up a 10-15 minute challenge. Why Social Media? Nearly everyone has a mobile phone 2.31 billion people in the world are active social media users Twitter haS APPROX 320 million monthly active users. Instagram has more than 500 million active monthly users. YouTube has over a billion users— almost one-third of all people on the internet. Seven in ten 12 to 15 year olds in the UK have a social media profile. 12-15’s now spend nearly three and a half hours a week more online than they do watching a TV set the mobile phone has overtaken the TV set as the device they would miss the most.

Why should ASSIST FM be the organisation to take on this challenge? We can speak to every pupil through the catering service in each school. We have already worked in partnership with Education Scotland and the Scottish Food and Drink Federation We understand young people and food issues – we talk to them on an ongoing basis…

INCH BY INCH FOR SCOTLAND OBJECTIVES To make a change in dietary and fitness habits that will have a positive effect on obesity in Scotland amongst pupils and their parents To highlight and educate on healthy eating/diets and fitness To promote the services of local authority caterers To promote the services of other relevant agencies across Scotland To create a campaign that has real resonance and is aimed at promoting a change in cultural attitudes within Scotland
