Sustainability Assessment tool Introduction Project Scope Sustainability Assessment tool Data Collection Recommendations WHY GO SOLAR? ABUNDANT Completely free, abundant natural resource Rapid depletion of conventional sources of energy like fossil fuel ACCESSIBLE Used any time during the day Easy and safe to install Govt. of India is pushing for increased adoption of non conventional sources of energy through subsidies SUSTAINABLE Though initial installation costs are high, long term benefits in terms of energy and money are significant

Choice of Sustainability Assessment Tool Cost & Benefit Analysis Introduction Project Scope Choice of Sustainability Assessment Tool Cost & Benefit Analysis Recommendations Project Selection There is an existing proposal under way in IIM Indore to install Grid connected roof top solar panels to make the buildings solar enabled. The proposed solar project’s monthly capacity will be 4800kWh while the current monthly usage of electricity is 17000kWh. Hence, the focus area of our project is Facilitating Solar Streetlight enabled campus.

Choice of Sustainability Assessment Tool Cost & Benefit Analysis Introduction Project Scope Choice of Sustainability Assessment Tool Cost & Benefit Analysis Recommendations A solar panel with 20% efficiency and an area of 1 m2 will produce 200 W at Standard Test Conditions[1]. With an average exposure of 5.5 kWh/m2/day, the panel can be expected to produce 440 kWh of energy per year. [1] : Source - Wikipedia

solar enabled street light- COMPONENTS Introduction Project Scope Choice of Sustainability Assessment Tool Cost & Benefit Analysis Recommendations solar enabled street light- COMPONENTS FOCUS AREA Solar panel Rechargeable Battery Controller / Sensor Pole LED Fixtures Potential Areas we can target: Street lights in and around SR-15, SR-17 & FPM Street lights in and around Academic block Street lights present on the way towards New Auditorium & Academic block Reason behind selecting these areas: Continued exposure to sunlight

Cost-benefit analysis Introduction Project Scope Choice of Sustainability Assessment Tool Cost & Benefit Analysis Recommendations Cost-benefit analysis Tool Selected: The amount of capital investment required is huge, hence to evaluate our project we employed Cost-Benefit analysis & calculated time required to break even.

Choice of Sustainability Assessment Tool Cost & Benefit Analysis Introduction Project Scope Choice of Sustainability Assessment Tool Cost & Benefit Analysis Recommendations Basic statistics No. of Street lights available on campus= 750 Wattage employed = 70W mostly, a few have ratings of 150W & 250W Present cost per unit of electricity= Rs. 6.40 per kWh. Average daily hours of operation= 10 hrs. No. of hours of sunlight daily= 6 Derating factor=0.8(Losses in conversion of DC to AC) Maintenance costs incurred currently= 20lakhs per year. Solar units generated per day= 70W*750 *0.8*6= 252kWh (kW *derating factor * No. of hrs of sunlight)

Choice of Sustainability Assessment Tool Cost & Benefit Analysis Introduction Project Scope Choice of Sustainability Assessment Tool Cost & Benefit Analysis Recommendations Capex model-option-1 Cost involved to install 1 solar enabled street light = Rs. 15000 Total initial investment required= 750 *15000= 112.5lakhs. Subsidies by state & central govt. = 35% Net investment required= 73.125lakhs. Per year savings @present tariff = No. of days in a year * No. of solar units produced per day * present tariff = 365*252*6.4= 5.886lakhs. Pay back period = 73.125/5.886= 12.42 years.

Resco model(Renewable energy service model) Introduction Project Scope Choice of Sustainability Assessment Tool Cost & Benefit Analysis Recommendations Resco model(Renewable energy service model) Initial Investment= 0 Per day electricity consumption of 750 street lights= 750*70W*10= 525kWh Tariff @6.4= 525* 6.4= Rs. 3360 Per day solar energy generated = 252kWh. Tariff @ 5.4( In RESCO model)= 252*5.4= Rs. 1360.8 Total savings per day = 252*(6.4-5.4)= Rs 252. Total savings per year= 365 *252= Rs 91980.
