Why I work in higher education Changing Lives… Making the world a better place…

The Top Ten

Trust… (Is foundational) Admit weaknesses and mistakes Ask for help Accept questions and input about their areas of responsibility Give one another the benefit of the doubt before arriving at a negative conclusion Take risks in offering feedback and assistance Appreciate and tap into one another’s skills and experiences Focus time and energy on important issues, not politics Offer and accept apologies without hesitation Look forward to meetings and other opportunities to work as a group.

Trust Character Competence Intent Integrity Capability Results Caring Honesty Skills Reputation Transparency Fairness Knowledge Credibility Openness Authenticity Experience Performance

Members of trusting teams... Admit weaknesses and mistakes Ask for help Accept questions and input about their areas of responsibility Give one another the benefit of the doubt before arriving at a negative conclusion Take risks in offering feedback and assistance Appreciate and tap into one another’s skills and experiences Focus time and energy on important issues, not politics Offer and accept apologies without hesitation Look forward to meetings and other opportunities to work as a group.

Communication is key… (360°)

(You can never make up in tactics what you lack in strategy)

Process & Structure bring freedom… (It eliminates uncertainty)

Change… (It’s what we do)

No one is an island… (Be a team player)

(It’s what it means to be a professional) Be a self-starter… (It’s what it means to be a professional)

Mistakes are learning opportunities… (Unless you try to hide them)

Knowledge and information should be shared… (Hoarding information is NOT job security)

Innovate everything, always, continuously

Have fun!

Guiding Principles Culture of “We” New Destination Support the Structure of Penn State Guiding Principles These guiding principles will serve as precepts that guide the efforts of the VP/CIO through the development of future goals, strategies and efforts to optimize the efficiency and effectiveness of Penn State information technology.   Guiding Principle #1 - Moving toward a culture of “we” It is imperative to utilize an inclusive and collaborative approach when designing the future for information technology. Appropriately engaging campus stakeholders is critical to developing the “new normal” for IT at Penn State University. Guiding Principle #2 - A New Destination How will Penn State University leverage information technology, in the year 2020, and beyond? Are campus IT professionals positioning technology to be a differentiator and strategic resource for PSU? Are we developing thought leadership in areas key to the future of higher education? Guiding Principle #3 - Honoring the Culture and Structure Each campus, school, college and management center has very specific and specialized needs for IT support. Explore opportunities to leverage the collaborative nature of distributed IT in order to maximize efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of IT support to the Penn State community. How do we leverage the legacy of Penn State IT to move to a new level of strategic success?
