PROVERBS 5 MARRIAGE

MARRIAGE: GOD’S PLAN Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. Hebrews 13:4 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate. Matthew 19:6 An unconditional lifetime commitment of Biblical marital intimacy to one imperfect person. Spiritual Intimacy Emotional Intimacy Physical Intimacy

MARRIAGE: GOD’S PURPOSES Glorify & please Himself (1 Cor. 10:31; 2 Cor. 5:9) Illustrate the relationship between Christ and the church (Ephesians 5:22-33) Change you to become like Christ (Phil. 2:1-8) Do away with aloneness (Genesis 2:18) Establish the family (Genesis 1:27-28) Pleasure (Song of Solomon; Proverbs 5) Protection (Proverbs 5; 1 Cor. 7:2-5)

MARRIAGE PRIORITY Your spouse should be your most important person Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24 Your spouse should be your main ministry (Matthew 22:36-40; Ephesians 5:22-33)

PROVERBS 5:1-2 1 My son, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding, 2 that you may keep discretion, and your lips may guard knowledge. Adultery is common Many married couples are distant Advisors are many You must choose who is right Eve – “I wonder who is right?”

PROVERBS 5:3-6 THE FORBIDDEN WOMAN 3 For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil, 4 but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. 5 Her feet go down to death; her steps follow the path to Sheol; 6 she does not ponder the path of life; her ways wander, and she does not know it.

IT LOOKS PHYSICAL IT IS SPIRITUAL Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Cor. 10:31 “What could I do right now to glorify God?” Eve – “I wonder who is right?”

PROVERBS 5:7-8 THE SLIPPERY SLOPE 7 And now, O sons, listen to me, and do not depart from the words of my mouth. 8 Keep your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house, The best way to loose a fight: not know you are in one. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Eph. 6:12

PROVERBS 5:9-11 EARTHLY CONSEQUENCES 9 lest you give your honor to others and your years to the merciless, 10 lest strangers take their fill of your strength, and your labors go to the house of a foreigner, 11 and at the end of your life you groan, when your flesh and body are consumed,

PROVERBS 5:12-14 “IF ONLY” 12 and you say, “How I hated discipline, and my heart despised reproof! 13 I did not listen to the voice of my teachers or incline my ear to my instructors. 14 I am at the brink of utter ruin in the assembled congregation.” Eve – “I now know who was right.”

GOD’S COMMANDS GOD’S PROVISION No sexual impurity No adultery – physical, visual, or emotional God’s provision: An unconditional lifetime commitment of Biblical marital intimacy to one imperfect person.

MARRIAGE = PROTECTION 1 CORINTHIANS 7:2-5 2 But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. 3 The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5 Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

PROVERBS 5:15-17 GOD MADE MEN “THIRSTY” PRIVATE vs. PUBLIC “WATER” 15 Drink water from your own cistern, flowing water from your own well. 16 Should your springs be scattered abroad, streams of water in the streets? 17 Let them be for yourself alone, and not for strangers with you.

PROVERBS 5:18-20 GET DRUNK AT HOME! 18 Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, 19 a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love. 20 Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman and embrace the bosom of an adulteress?

PROVERBS 5:21 GOD KNOWS & HE IS OUR JUDGE 21 For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD, and he ponders all his paths. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. 2 Corinthians 5:10

“CHRISTIAN ATHEISM” Know God’s Word Say you believe God’s Word Live like God is a myth and His Word is irrelevant to your daily life. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good. Psalms 14:1

PROVERBS 5:22-23 SIN IS A PRISON OF DEATH 22 The iniquities of the wicked ensnare him, and he is held fast in the cords of his sin. 23 He dies for lack of discipline, and because of his great folly he is led astray. Galatians 6:7-8 7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
