Joseph Judah And Potifar’s Wife And Tamar Genesis 38-39

Joseph and Judah What short-term or long-term consequences may follow those choices: 1. A friend tells you that it is okay to engage in sexual behaviors together because you love and trust each other. 2. A friend keeps trying to get you to use pornographic material. 3. A friend of the opposite gender invites you into his or her bedroom so you can be alone to talk.

Joseph Genesis 37

Judah Genesis 38:13-18 Genesis 38:19-23 Genesis 38:24-26 Genesis 38

Joseph Genesis 39

Horseshoes A man rode into town on a horse. The horse needed new horseshoes badly and the man was willing to pay cash. There are two payment options:   A. The man would pay you $100,000 to shoe his horse B. The man will pay you 1 cent for the first nail and double each nail there after (1st nail =1 penny; 2nd nail = 2 pennies; 3rd nail = 4 pennies; 4th nail = 8 pennies; etc.). There will be a total of 32 nails. The 32 nail would be worth $21,474,836.48

Joseph Read Genesis 39:1-6? Read Genesis 39:7-12. (study with a partner) Read Genesis 39:1-6? What qualities do you think Potifar saw in Young Joseph? How has the Lord favored you in your life? Read Genesis 39:7-12. Vs 7 Why is she so persistent? (Notice, it was pre- meditated ) Vs 10 “Hearkened not” (Cross reference 1 Nephi 8:34 & Hebrews 4:15). Have you had experience with this? Vs 12 Cross reference D&C 20:22, 1 Cor 10:13-14 Read Genesis 39:13-20. Vs 20 - Why not kill Joseph? Read Gen 39:21-23.

Joseph What is the repeated phrase in Genesis 39:2,3,21,23? Would vs12 and vs23 be the same as vs2,3,21,23 weren’t there? What lessons are we to learn from this story? Why is this story in the scriptures? Have you ever experienced painful or difficult consequences for choosing to do what is right?

Joseph “Never do anything that could lead to sexual transgression. Treat others with respect, not as objects used to satisfy lustful and selfish desires. Before marriage, do not participate in passionate kissing, lie on top of another person, or touch the private, sacred parts of another person’s body, with or without clothing. Do not do anything else that arouses sexual feelings. Do not arouse those emotions in your own body. Pay attention to the promptings of the Spirit so that you can be clean and virtuous. …

Joseph “Avoid situations that invite increased temptation, such as late-night or overnight activities away from home or activities where there is a lack of adult supervision. Do not participate in discussions or any media that arouse sexual feelings. Do not participate in any type of pornography. The Spirit can help you know when you are at risk and give you the strength to remove yourself from the situation. Have faith in and be obedient to the righteous counsel of your parents and leaders” (For the Strength of Youth [booklet, 2011], 36).  What are some specific ways you can avoid compromising situations that may threaten your virtue?

Elder Holland “Personal Purity,” Ensign, Nov. 1998, 76–77). Lessons from Joseph “In matters of human intimacy, you must wait! You must wait until you can give everything, and you cannot give everything until you are legally and lawfully married. To give illicitly that which is not yours to give is emotional Russian roulette. If you persist without the sanction of heaven, you run the terrible risk of such spiritual, psychic damage that you may undermine both your longing for physical intimacy and your ability to give wholehearted devotion to a later, truer love… Elder Holland “Personal Purity,” Ensign, Nov. 1998, 76–77).

Elder Holland “Personal Purity,” Ensign, Nov. 1998, 76–77). Lessons from Joseph “On your wedding day the very best gift you can give your eternal companion is your very best self— clean and pure and worthy of such purity in return.” Elder Holland “Personal Purity,” Ensign, Nov. 1998, 76–77).
