Recap He shows signs of relenting as the plagues progress, but God hardens Pharaoh’s heart so that His power may be shown (Ex 9:16-17) Pharaoh’s magicians are able to mimic three of the plagues, but admit that it’s the finger of God with the plague of gnats

Death of the firstborn Exodus 11:4-8 – Moses said, “Thus says the Lord, ‘About midnight I am going out into the midst of Egypt, and all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of the Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the firstborn of the slave girl who is behind the millstones; all the firstborn of the cattle as well. Moreover, there shall be a great cry in all the land of Egypt, such as there has not been before and such as shall never be again. But against any of the sons of Israel a dog will not even bark, whether against man or beast, that you may understand how the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.’ All these your servants will come down to me and bow themselves before me, saying, ‘Go out, you and all the people who follow you,’ and after that I will go out.” And he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger.

Israel’s protection from the destroyer God provided protection from the destroyer who would come around that night to kill all of the first born in Egypt This protection came in the form of placing blood on the doorway of their homes from what became known as the Passover lamb It was the blood from this lamb that prevented them from suffering punishment It was the blood that ultimately freed Israel (redeemed) from Egyptian bondage

God’s Passover Instructions Ex 12:1 – This month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of the year to you Deut. 16:1 – “Observe the month of Abib and celebrate the Passover to the Lord your God, for in the month of Abib the Lord your God brought you out of Egypt by night.” The Hebrew month is the Jewish month Nisan, which is somewhere during our March/April timeframe

How it was to be eaten Exodus 12:8-10 – They shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled at all with water, but rather roasted with fire, both its head and its legs along with its entrails. And you shall not leave any of it over until morning, but whatever is left of it until morning, you shall burn with fire

How they were to be dressed Exodus 12:11-12 – Now you shall eat it in this manner: with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste— it is the Lord’s Passover. For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments—I am the Lord

The purpose There were specific instructions on how the Passover was to be eaten, even down to how they were to be dressed The main idea was to be prepared to leave Egypt

Blood on the doorpost Exodus 12:7 – Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it Exodus 12:13 – The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt

Blood on the doorpost Exodus 12:21-22 – Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go and take for yourselves lambs according to your families, and slay the Passover lamb. You shall take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood which is in the basin, and apply some of the blood that is in the basin to the lintel and the two doorposts; and none of you shall go outside the door of his house until morning

A memorial to be observed Exodus 12:23-24 – For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to come in to your houses to smite you. And you shall observe this event as an ordinance for you and your children forever.

A memorial to be observed Exodus 12:25-27 – When you enter the land which the Lord will give you, as He has promised, you shall observe this rite. And when your children say to you, ‘What does this rite mean to you?’ you shall say, ‘It is a Passover sacrifice to the Lord who passed over the houses of the sons of Israel in Egypt when He smote the Egyptians, but spared our homes.’” And the people bowed low and worshiped.

The Passover lamb The lamb was to be chosen on the 10th of that month and preparations for it made Had to be a one year old, unblemished, male lamb Could be a sheep or goat (vs. 5) On the 14th day, the lamb was to be killed at twilight (sunset) No bone was to be broken (vs. 46)

Jesus, the unblemished lamb of God Exodus 12:5 – Your lamb shall be an unblemished male a year old John 1:29 – The next day [John the Baptist] saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!“

Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover [lamb] also has been sacrificed

Jesus, the unblemished lamb of God Exodus 12:5 – Your lamb shall be an unblemished male a year old 1 Pet 17-19 – If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ

Jesus, the unblemished lamb of God Exodus 12:5 – Your lamb shall be an unblemished male a year old Heb 4:15-16 – For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Not a bone is to be broken Exodus 12:46 – …nor are you to break any bone of it John 19:31-34 – Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him; but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.

Not a bone is to be broken Exodus 12:46 – …nor are you to break any bone of it John 19:34-36 – But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, "NOT A BONE OF HIM SHALL BE BROKEN."

His death coincided with Passover Most likely timeline: Thursday, Nisan 14 – Actual Passover Day. Jesus eats the Passover with His disciples (Mk 14). During this, He institutes the Lord’s Supper. He’s arrested later that night Friday, Jesus is crucified and is killed on the “day of preparation” (for the Sabbath) Saturday – Sabbath Day Sunday – Resurrection Day

Jesus institutes the Lord’s Supper Mark 14:22-25 – While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is My body.” And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And He said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God

Jesus institutes the Lord’s Supper Exodus 12 outlines the use of the unleavened bread during the Passover, and also during the following 7 day Feast of Unleavened Bread. Jesus used this bread as a symbol for his body that was to be sacrificed He then used the fruit of the vine that they were drinking as a symbol of His blood that would be shed

Jesus, our Passover lamb Even though Christians do not have a requirement, nor a reason, to commemorate the Passover, Jesus is our Passover lamb (I Cor 5:7, 1 Pet 1:19, Rev 5) The destroyer passed over the houses of those who had the blood of the lamb on their doorpost Likewise, having the blood of Christ upon us will save us from eternal destruction!

Jesus, our Passover lamb Hebrews 9:11-12 – But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

Jesus, our Passover lamb Hebrews 9:13-14 – For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God

Jesus, our Passover lamb Hebrews 9:15 – For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance

Our protection from the destroyer Just as the blood of the Passover lamb protected Israel from the destroyer, so does our Passover Lamb, Jesus, protect us from being destroyed It was the blood of this lamb that ultimately led to Israel’s freedom from Egyptian bondage. Likewise, it is the blood of Jesus who has set us free from the bondage of sin and death!
