Title: Our salvation and sanctification as God's chosen people from all over the world Text: 1 Peter 1 1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To God’s elect, strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, 2 who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance. By: Pastor Micah Adamson November 13, 2016 1 Peter 1:1-2 (NIV84) Title

1 Peter 1:1a (NIV84) – From 1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ… This message is coming from God through Peter.

1 Peter 1:1b (NIV84) – To …To God’s elect, strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia… We’re God’s chosen people who are not only strangers on earth, we’re also strangers in our own countries. God’s people face temptations related to suffering: persecution on one side and prosperity on the other. We need to remember that we are strangers here on earth and in the US.

1 Peter 1:2a (NIV84) – Introduction 2 …[God’s elect] who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood... Our salvation is: From God Jewish Good for us For God Connected to all the other S’s of 1 Peter

Our Salvation includes all 5 S’s used to outline 1 Peter Introduction (1:1-2) Salvation (1:3–12) Sanctification (1:13–2:3) Selection (2:4–10) Submission (2:11–3:12) Suffering (3:13–4:19) Conclusion (5:1-14)

1 Peter 1:2b-12 (NIV84) Good for us + From God + For God (Salvation) Grace and peace be yours in abundance. 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

1 Peter 1:6-9 (NIV84) Good for us + For God + From God (Salvation + Suffering) 6 In this [the salvation in Jesus just described] you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

1 Peter 1:10-12 (NIV84) Jewish + From God (Salvation + Suffering) 10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

1 Peter 1:13-25 (NIV84) – Jewish + For God + From God (Sanctification + Salvation + Submission + Suffering + Selection) 13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” [Leviticus 11:44-45, 19:2, 20:7] 17 Since you call on a Father who judges each man’s work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear. Exodus 12:11 (NIV84) 11 This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover.

“Prepare your minds for action” (NIV84) = “Gird up the loins of your mind” (NKJV)

Proverbs 31:4, 6-7a (NIV84) 4 It is… not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer… 6 Give beer to those who are perishing, wine to those who are in anguish; 7 let them drink and forget…

Sanctified/Holy = Set Apart

1 Peter 1:18-21 (NIV84) Jewish + From God (Salvation + Selection) 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

1 Peter 1:22-25 (NIV84) For God + Jewish (Sanctification + Submission + Salvation) 22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart. 23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For, “All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, 25 but the word of the Lord stands forever.” [Isaiah 40:6-8] And this is the word that was preached to you.

Isaiah 40:1-8 (NIV84) Comfort my people by… (40:1). Assuring them that their sin is forgiven (40:2). Announcing that God is coming and they can get to Him (40:3-5). And, assuring them that unlike people and plants, God’s word lasts forever (40:6-8). Peter adds: “And this is the word that was preached to you.” (1 Peter 1:25) We won’t perish since God’s word won’t perish.

Conclusion: Our salvation, sanctification, selection, submission, and suffering are all related. Our salvation is: From God Jewish Good for us For God

1 Peter 1 agrees with John 3:16 John 3:16 (NIV84) 16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. The good news for whoever believes in Jesus is that we won’t perish (1 Peter 1:23). We have an inheritance that won’t perish like gold (1 Peter 1:4). We have a faith that won’t perish like gold (1 Peter 1:7). We have a redeeming sacrifice that won’t perish like gold (1 Peter 1:18). All this is promised by God’s word that won’t perish like people or plants (1 Peter 1:23).
