Hardware & Software Lesson 2 Hardware: Input, Output & Storage Devices KS3 COMPUTING Hardware & Software Lesson 2 Hardware: Input, Output & Storage Devices KS3 Computing Hardware & Software

Lesson Aims 1 To understand the term Hardware 2 To understand the terms Input, Output and Storage Device 3 To be able to list examples of the above

Hardware What is Hardware? Hardware is the physical parts of a computer system In other words, the parts of the computer you can touch

Hardware What is an Input Device? An input device is a piece of hardware that allows the user to put data into a computer system

What is an Output Device? Hardware What is an Output Device? An output device is a piece of hardware that allows the user to receive data from a computer system

What is a Storage Device? Hardware What is a Storage Device? This allows a user to install programs and save their files on a computer The device retains this information when the power is switched off, this means it is a permanent storage There are three categories of storage devices.

There are three categories of storage devices Hardware There are three categories of storage devices Magnetic Optical Solid State Works by magnetising and demagnetising the surface of a spinning disk. Works by altering parts of a disc that can or cannot reflect a laser beam. Uses flash memory and has no moving parts. Example: Hard Drive Example: CD/DVD/Blu-Ray Example: USB Stick/SD Card

Below are examples of each type of device Input Devices Output Devices Storage Devices

Sort the following devices into the correct category Activity 1 Sort the following devices into the correct category Input Devices Output Devices Storage Devices

Activity 2 You must recommend: 3 input devices 2 output devices Scenario You are an IT manager for a school that has recently moved into a new building. The head teacher has asked you to research the various types of input, output and storage devices needed when they purchase their new computers. He wants you to find information about the devices you recommend the school purchases. He needs you to present this information to him in a meeting tomorrow. Your task is to create this presentation. Each recommendation must be accompanied with a suitable reason and an example use based on the scenario above. You must recommend: 3 input devices 2 output devices 2 storage devices

Completing a piece of typed class work. Input Devices Input Recommendation 1 Keyboard Reason Enables students to input information in the form of letters and numbers by pressing the keys. Example Use Completing a piece of typed class work. Example slide
