i Summer Independent Learning Challenge In this Learning Challenge you are going to lean about the Country of France. You will be completing both Art and Geography learning challenges linked to French culture. My Learning Objectives: -To be able to recognise and talk confidently about how paintings were made by French artists. To understand how French artists from the past created their art work . -To be able to identify and describe a countries traditions and cultures -To understand how a place can have unique characteristics. Information

Guidance for students: ‘Past & Present’ Guidance for students: You need to work regularly each week to complete this project by the hand in date given on the last slide of this PowerPoint. Make sure you read through this PowerPoint presentation from start to finish before you begin! Try to complete at least one task each week – DO NOT LEAVE IT ALL UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!!!! Ask your Art or Geography teacher for help if your are unsure about any part of this ILC. Your teacher will be checking your progress regularly over the term. Guidance for parents: The idea behind this independent learning challenge is to encourage pupils to work at home and develop independent learning skills outside of the classroom. This project should take between 10 – 15 hours to complete. Where possible Students should complete work by themselves with only guidance from parents. Pupils will need a basic range of art equipment to complete the tasks in this ILC. Additional help and equipment are available to all pupils during the extra curricular homework clubs held each week in school.

The Past… PART 1: Art & Design In this part of the project you will be learning about a French Artist, his name is Claude Monet

Choose one activity from each of the lists below to complete Choose one activity from each of the lists below to complete. You should have 5 finished pieces of work by the end of this Art section… Art Activity List Task 1: Work inspired by Monet: -Copy a famous painting by Claude Monet using any materials to paint or draw with. -Find a photograph of Claude Monet and dress up like him. Take a photograph of this. -Try and recreate a painting by Claude Monet using food from your kitchen cupboards to make a collage with. Food such as salt, sugar pastas etc would work well. -Collect items from your garden; use these to create a picture in the style of Claude Monet. Task 2: Finding out facts about Claude Monet: -Produce a fact sheet about the life of Claude Monet. -write about a painting by Claude Monet. Describe what you can see in this picture. Write a Newspaper article reviewing one of your chosen artists paintings. Choose two different paintings by Monet. Look at these carefully and write about how similar and different they are to each other. Task 3: Events which happened during Monet’s Life: -Find out which year Monet was born. Make a list of 5 different events which happened during that year. Write a diary entry for Claude Monet. Imagine on this day he had just finished one of his paintings, he was very happy with his work. What do you think he would write about in his personal diary? -Find out which year Monet died. Find out about a major event that took place during this year. Task 4: How Monet’s work makes you feel: Write a poem about how a painting by Claude Monet makes you feel. Write a list of words to describe how a painting by Claude Monet makes you feel. Link each word to a colour e.g. happy may be yellow and red may be angry. Choose a painting made by Claude Monet. Write a story about how your artist was feeling on the day he painted this picture. Task 5: Designing a Monet based Product: Design a hat for Claude Monet to wear based on his paintings. Design or make a board game based on any part of Claude Monet's work. Write a quiz book based on Claude Monet. Design a teapot based on one of Monet’s paintings. Make a jigsaw puzzle from a copy of a painting you have made from Claude Monet.

The Present… PART 2: Geography In this part of the project you will be learning about how France has developed an identity and some of its unique characteristics.

You should have 5 finished pieces of work by the end of this Geography section… GEOGRAPHY Activity List Task 3: Advertising a place. Make a map of Paris to show the cities main features. Make a small fact file for each feature. Record an informative audio guide to Paris to be listened to by tourists as they walk around the city. Make a tourist information map which shows a cycle route around Paris and some information about specific places of interest Choose an area of France you think is good for tourism and produce something to market (advertise) this attraction. Task 1:Researching information about a place. Make a map of France showing its main physical (Rivers etc) and human features (towns and cities etc). Make a photo gallery of French physical (Rivers etc) and human features (towns and cities etc). Label the features in each photograph Make a French flag. In the red put the names of physical features. In the blue put the names of human features. In the white you can put some images. Task 2:Sharing facts about a place with friends. Make a factsheet about one tourist attraction in France. Include images and interesting facts Make a postcard for one location or landmark in France. Write to a friend describing what you have seen and found out about the place as if you have been there, Make an A4 page for a holiday brochure. Choose one place in France and describe the physical and human features there. This may include climate, landmarks, places to stay, and things to do. Task 4: Comparing France with another place. Make a comparison table to show the differences between France and the UK e.g. currency, cars, climate etc Make a comparison table to show the difference between Paris and London e.g. methods of transport, rivers, main attractions etc Make a comparison poster (page split in half) or table for two other places you have visited (This may be two cities or two countries or two visitor attractions you have visited). task 5:Using my research to create something new. Design a ‘French experience’ theme park for the UK. Show what you would include and explain how this would enable people to experience the culture of France. Write an article for a travel magazine comparing France and the UK as tourist destinations. Consider which/what is better and explain why. Explain why France/Paris is an interesting country/city and suggest future developments that would ensure it remains a popular tourist attraction.

PART 3: Presenting your work - You will need to produce a hand made folder to hold both your Art and Geography work. You need to create a folder based on any part of the artist Monet’s work. For example, you could make a folder shaped like a water lily leaf, as seen in his paintings. - You should mount you artwork at the front and your Geography work at the back of your folder. TASK: Folder made in the shape of a lily leaf! Folder made in the shape of a French straw hat!
