Guaranteed annual income (GAI) Definition: minimum level of basic income ensured by the government on a continuing basis to all, regardless of workforce participation Concept of income floor Income level that is sufficient to meet basic needs and live with dignity (BICN)

GAI and Public health Low income (individual) and growing income inequality (societal) are key SDOH in Ontario/Canada. Many policy solutions. GAI increasingly being called for by health and social policy experts. GAI compelling: comprehensive, successfully piloted, balances equity and efficiency, gaining momentum. Today’s panel to explore GAI and relevance to public health. Support for GAI is growing amongst health and public health experts and organizations, including recent formal expressions of support from the Canadian Medical Association and the Alberta Public Health Association, and the CPHA is exploring the issue (such as in a position statement). There is also an ongoing campaign for basic income in Canada which is gaining momentum, called the BIG (Basic Income Guarantee) Push.
