Who Moved My Cheese? Keeping up with Changes in the Cancer Registry and Life Joyce Allan, MPh, CTR Registry Solutions Inc.

A little background Who Moved My Cheese? Spencer Johnson, M.D. A way to deal with change in your work place and in your life Copyright 1998 The way we adapt to change and succeed in changing times

How do you adapt to change? Sniff – senses the change early Scurry – scurries into action Hem – deny and resist, fear of something worse Haw –learn to adapt in time, changes lead to something better

How do you adapt to change? Are you flexible? Are you afraid of change? Is change stressful for you? Hard to expect the unexpected Snooze and lose?

The Story Two little mice, Sniff and Scurry Two littlepeople, Hem and Haw Their days are spent looking for and enjoying Cheese When supplies dwindle they are forced to react Sniff and Scratch go off in search of new cheese, they expected change and react accordingly Hem and Haw have a hard time

The story continued….. They did not accept that they would have to change They were comfortable in the status quo denied anything was different, “getting too old for this”, resisted the new or unknown Realization that things have and will change and it is just easier to accept at first

The story continues….. Fear of the unknown Why didn’t I get up and move with the cheese sooner? Better late than never? More worry and stress? Realization that change is inevitable Think about what you can gain instead of what you are losing

Adjust to survive Change your attitude Find ways to address change Release the NEGATIVE energy Find a healthy outlet – Yoga, meditation, kick boxing, dance, punching bag, Nia, belly dancing, tennis, running, etc. Get enough sleep

New Manuals, Websites Education, webinars, software changes New rules, new codes, new data items Mistakes, learning curve Loss of productivity Abstracting time The age old question “How long does it take to do an abstract?” !!!! Can you answer that?

Remember the KISS rule The material is complex Work one site at a time Read the site chapter, work a few cases Repetition is a good learning tool Read the manual – do not depend on your software to do the work for you

Where do we Begin in our field? CS Staging SSF’s FORDS TNM Editions Class of Case MPH Rules ICD-Oncology Codes ICD-9 to ICD-10 Codes Hematopoietic Rules

CS Staging CS Staging – now you see it now you don’t! What’s coming? Stay tuned this will be a major challenge for all of us! What we do know is that CS staging and the SSFs are leaving More manuals, new data fields, more training Are you ready for this??

FORDS FORDS Revision Project Mechanism in place to: Change existing data items Add new items Remove existing data items

TNM 8TH Edition ERRATA ERRATA

Are these people nuts? Who wants to pay $120 for a book that is incorrect and has 100 plus pages of corrections? No one answering my question about updating the publication currently for sale Seriously…. I am waiting for the electronic version

In Conclusion Change is an inevitable part of life whether personal or professional Resist it or embrace it What is best for your mental and physical health Life is a journey and the glass is half full
