PSYC 3806 Undergraduate research Assistantships The PASS Center Academic Advising for Psychology Minors Psychology Minor Tutorial PSYC 3806 Undergraduate research Assistantships The Undergraduate Research Assistantships involve initiating, designing, conducting and reporting an original experiment or review of the Psychological literature under the direction of a full-time UNCC Psychology faculty member. The course provides opportunities for individual study in a student’s special area of interest. The course permits advanced, specialized study and also provides experience that is often valuable in locating a job or gaining admission to graduate school upon graduation. Students have conducted experiments and engaged in research reviews in all areas of Psychology. Many student research projects have resulted in published articles or professional presentations. The first step toward enrollment in the course is to review faculty’s research interests http://psych.uncc.edu/research. Students should contact faculty as soon as possible during the semester BEFORE you plan to participate in the Individual Studies Assistantship (e.g., contact faculty early during the fall semester to register for a spring assistantship). Students will need to receive a permit to register from the faculty for whom they are conducting the Research Assistantship. Students interested in Individual Studies Assistantships are NOT automatically enrolled by faculty members. Often these assistantship are competitive and may require an application process specified by the particular faculty member.   To take PSYC 3806 you: must be a Psychology minor with a GPA of 2.0 or higher are limited to a maximum of 3 credits of PSYC 3806 at UNCC

Academic Advising for the Psychology Minor at UNC Charlotte The PASS Center Academic Advising for Psychology Majors Psychology Major Tutorial Academic Advising for the Psychology Minor at UNC Charlotte The PASS Center , located in Colvard 4111, was established to assist psychology majors and minors on their journey to an undergraduate degree and beyond. We are here to answer questions, provide information and guidance. An advisor won’t make decisions for students, but will provide information and suggestions which allow students to make informed decisions about their future endeavors. All new Psychology minors will be assigned to Advisor Dr. Kat West . All Psychology students are able to schedule appointments with Advisor William Gillison (wgilliso@uncc.edu). He is available to help any psychology major or minor with course progression, scheduling suggestions, removing academic holds, etc. All Psychology students are also able to schedule appointments with the Undergraduate Coordinator, Dr. Kat West. She is available to help with career planning, questions about graduate school, etc. The PASS Center maintains a library of resources for writing in Psychology, careers in psychology, applying to graduate school, and information files for graduate programs around the country. The size of the Psychology program puts a great demand on the academic advisors. To ensure the best possible service several advising policies are in place.

Psychology Department Academic Advising Policies The PASS Center Academic Advising for Psychology Majors Psychology Major Tutorial Psychology Department Academic Advising Policies To schedule an appointment with an advisor – Go to Starfish to schedule an appointment. If your advisor is not available at the times you need - check for walk-in advising. No Show policy – Any student who makes an appointment and does not show for that appointment or arrives more than 15 minutes late, without notice, will be restricted to walk-in advising for the remainder of the term. Unprepared policy - Students who arrive at an advising appointment unprepared for the appointment may be asked to reschedule the appointment. To be prepared for your advising appointment students should: 1. Review requirements to determine the courses still needed for the major, minor and General Education. Check the CAPP Degree Evaluation for possible missing coursework. 2. Review the courses offered for the following term(s) to determine what is offered. 3. Plan an ideal schedule and a plan B, maybe even a plan C for high demand courses. 4. Prepare questions about course selection for your advisor. 5. Be prepared to discuss time to degree, will you finish in 4 years? Have a plan and bring your plan.

Psychology Department Academic Advising Policies The PASS Center Academic Advising for Psychology Majors Psychology Major Tutorial Psychology Department Academic Advising Policies Pre-Registration Advising (the month prior to registration week) Advising appointments will fill quickly. If you have an advising hold it is in your best interest to schedule your advising appointment early. It is your responsibility to have your hold removed prior to registration. If your hold was placed by your major department, please do not request that your minor advisor to remove it. Do not expect to schedule an appointment for the next/same day, 24 hours ahead is the minimum. Attend an advising clinic, if eligible, rather than make an individual appointment. Do not plan to discuss career, graduate school plans, or other involved issues at this time. The appointment does not allow time for this. Make an appointment for these talks outside of the pre- registration period. Other Types of Advising within the department: Peer Advising – Available for students in good standing. Meet with a trained student advisor for course selection and progress toward degree. Good source of information from students who have been there. Advising Clinics – Available for students in good standing. Meet with a group of other Psychology students in a general discussion of courses and course sequencing. Short individual discussions are available at the during the group meeting if desired. **It is highly recommended that students on probation be seen individually by an academic advisor.

Monitoring Your Psychology Minor The PASS Center Academic Advising for Psychology Minors Psychology Minor Tutorial Monitoring Your Psychology Minor On Banner Self-Service: 1. Click on CAPP CAPP = Curriculum Advising and Program Planning The CAPP Degree Evaluation will show coursework completed and in progress grouped by the requirements of your Major, Minor, and General Education requirements. Click on Degree Evaluation. 3. If the correct major and minor appear click Generate New Evaluation. 4. When the correct major appears click on Generate Request.

Understanding the CAPP Evaluation: The PASS Center Academic Advising for Psychology Minors Psychology Minor Tutorial Understanding the CAPP Evaluation: On the CAPP Evaluation, your Psychology Minor will appear after your major requirements. Your Minor GPA will also appear in this group. Look for a red No this designates a required area is incomplete. If something is marked No and you feel the requirement should have been met, Please Contact your Minor advisor.

Important CAPP information for Psychology minors The PASS Center Academic Advising for Psychology Minors Psychology Minor Tutorial Important CAPP information for Psychology minors The CAPP degree evaluation will likely NOT be accurate for the Psychology Minor, especially if you declared your major in a term different from your minor. Why does this happen? The Banner System uses the term of your major for CAPP and that may evaluate your minor under the wrong requirements. The CAPP system also has several outdated numbers for courses (ex. the old number 3110 instead of the new number 2110). It is very important to request a review of your minor BEFORE Drop/Add is over in your final term. This may be done by emailing your assigned Psychology minor advisor. Exceptions to the minor requirements will NOT be granted if students relied on CAPP and did NOT verify completion requirements with their Psychology minor advisor.

Congratulations!! You have reached the end the Minor Tutorial. The PASS Center Academic Advising for Psychology Minors Psychology Minor Tutorial Conclusion Congratulations!! If, after two weeks, you do not see the changes you requested, please contact the Psychology Department’s Undergraduate Coordinator. Not eligible to declare a Psychology Minor at this time.
