UBC “Patent Powerhouse” Ranked 9th in N.A. by The Scientist for generating high-quality, patentable scientific research – number one in Canada. UBC led Canada in Gross Income from technology licenses in 2005 with $15,986,000 (91 licenses and options). SFU Research SFU received close to $70 million in research revenue in 2007/2008, the majority won in open competition outside British Columbia Approximately 550 Technology Disclosures have been made at SFU between 1985-2008, with approximately 400 patent applications filed 65+ license agreements to date; approx. 75 spin-off companies formed SFU ranks second in Canada in the number of start-up companies formed per $1 million invested in research and fourth in the number of US patents issued per $1 million

UVic Research In 16 years, UVic’s Innovation and Development Corporation (IDC) has: filed over 294 national and international patent applications helped incorporate 55+ spin-off companies based on UVic research or UVic student entrepreneurial initiatives Student ideas make up 35 per cent of IDC's annual invention disclosures. Eight of the IDCspin-off companies have been founded by UVic students. UVic researchers were awarded more than $106 million in outside research grants and contracts in 2007/08. This more than doubles the research support of the previous five-year period Leads all Canadian comprehensive universities in size and number of medical and science grants per faculty member Purchased the Vancouver Island Technology Park for $20.2 million. The park generates $280 million in direct, indirect and induced revenue, and creates more than 2,000 local jobs.
