Genome BC Research organization that invests in and manages large-scale genomics and proteomics research projects and science and technology platforms across life sciences sectors of economic significance to BC Investing $400M in life science research (2001 - 2010) in BC via regional, national and international investment Fostered a New Genomics Economy in BC in under five years Over 800 leading experts and research staff on 22 Genome BC projects and 5 platforms Recent recipient of $50 million from the Provincial Government for climate change research

Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Created in 2001 by the Province of BC to build BC’s capacity for excellent health research Investing $225 million in health research Operates as non profit society Goal – to increase BC’s ability to attract health researchers and increase BC’s share of federal health research funding

UBC “Patent Powerhouse” Ranked 9th in N.A. by The Scientist for generating high-quality, patentable scientific research – number one in Canada. Ranked 8th in N.A., by the Milken Institute and number one in Canada for its tech transfer and commercialization activities. UBC led Canada in Gross Income from technology licenses in 2005 with $15,986,000 (91 licenses and options). Published in June 20, 2005 issue of The Scientist, pg 40 Survey conducted by 1790 Analytics.

SFU Research SFU received close to $70 million in research revenue in 2007/2008, the majority won in open competition outside British Columbia Approximately 550 Technology Disclosures have been made at SFU between 1985-2008, with approximately 400 patent applications filed 65+ license agreements to date; approx. 75 spin-off companies formed SFU ranks second in Canada in the number of start-up companies formed per $1 million invested in research and fourth in the number of US patents issued per $1 million

UVic Research In 16 years, UVic’s Innovation and Development Corporation (IDC) has: filed over 294 national and international patent applications helped incorporate 55+ spin-off companies based on UVic research or UVic student entrepreneurial initiatives Student ideas make up 35 per cent of IDC's annual invention disclosures. Eight of the IDCspin-off companies have been founded by UVic students. UVic researchers were awarded more than $106 million in outside research grants and contracts in 2007/08. This more than doubles the research support of the previous five-year period Leads all Canadian comprehensive universities in size and number of medical and science grants per faculty member Purchased the Vancouver Island Technology Park for $20.2 million. The park generates $280 million in direct, indirect and induced revenue, and creates more than 2,000 local jobs.

Angiotech’s lead product is the paclitaxel-eluting coronary stent, TAXUS® which has now been implanted in millions of patients worldwide, and is the most successfully launched product in medical history. 2005 sales of TAXUS totaled $2.69B US
