Student Assembly

Can you think of a link between these 4 famous people? Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Walt Disney, the creator of Disney Motion Pictures and Disney Land Colonel Harland Sanders, the founder of KFC

They are all independent learners Independent or self-regulated learners are active and curious: they create their own hypotheses, ask their own questions, coach one another, set goals for themselves, monitor their progress and experiment with ideas for taking risks, knowing that mistakes and ‘being stuck’ are part of learning. DfES, 2006

Florence Nightingale A celebrated nurse and pioneer in nursing education, Nightingale herself was self-taught with some help from her father.

Colonel Sanders Colonel Sanders, founder of the KFC empire, dropped out of school in the 6th grade. Upon reaching retirement age without much in the way of funds, Colonel Sanders decided to better himself with self-education and the founding of KFC.

Branson has dyslexia and had poor academic performance as a student, but later discovered his ability to connect with others. On one of Branson's last days at school, his headmaster, Robert Drayson, told him he would either end up in prison or become a millionaire. Branson's parents were supportive of his endeavours from an early age. When 15-year-old Richard decided to breed budgies and persuaded his father to build a huge aviary, his father built it. Branson's parents have been described as encouraging. Richard Branson Highlight that independent learning doesn’t necessarily mean doing it on your own. It’s about having the motivation and initiative to try, taking whatever help is available along the way.

Walt Disney The namesake and co-founder of Walt Disney, this cartoonist taught himself to draw by copying drawings in magazines. He continued to learn throughout his life, always looking for new opportunities to improve

Are you an independent learner? Have you ever felt determined to learn something and gone out of your way to ensure you did? How did it make you feel? Asks students if any of them are independent learners. Have any of them been determined to learn something and gone out of their way to ensure they did? Gymnastics? Guitar? The next level of that computer game? Ask them how it makes them feel when they’ve worked hard to learn something?

Why is independent learning so important in year 11? ...help you learn how to work at your own pace, meet deadlines and organise your time effectively … help you identify areas of strength and weakness ...improve your academic performance Why is independent learning so important in year 11? ...increase your confidence and motivation … develop a sense of self-responsibility and self-discipline ...revise for your exams!
