Course Description There is significant research which indicates that color has a significant effect on human behavior especially students with special needs and in particular autistic students. Special education teachers have long known this and often put colored paper over their light fixtures to create the proper atmosphere for their students to learn. To meet this need in a more efficient manner the Full Spectrum Sensory Classroom was developed. This is a classroom in which the normal 2 X 4 light fixtures have been replaced with color changing LED panels. The teacher via smart phone, pad, or remote control device. Can change the color from normal “white” light across the visual color spectrum; i.e., red or orange when more activity is needed, blue when a calmer environment desired. The teachers who have implemented the Full Spectrum Sensory Classroom have given it glowing recommendations. It is quite a bit more professional than construction paper taped over light fixtures…

Learning Objectives At the end of the this course, participants will be able to: Identify special needs in terms of design and furnishings to offer maximum comfort and safety to students. Examine the effect of sound and the design and material solutions to improve comfort and reduce crisis situations. Examine the effect of color and special solutions to create a calm and nurturing environment. Observe how new LED lighting can be effectively used to improve the quality of life of special needs students in a school setting.
