Science Week 2 Lesson 1

Learning Objective: I can identify the seasons of the year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksGiLaIx39c Do you know the seasons? Challenge – do you know what months of the year are in each season?

Here is a globe and a torch. Learning Objective: I can describe the Earth and its movement around the Sun Here is a globe and a torch. The torch is acting as the sun and the globe is Earth. We are looking at the movement of Earth around the Sun using these resources.

I understand that the Earth moves around the Sun Learning Objective: I can describe the Earth and its movement around the Sun Success Criteria: I understand that the Earth moves around the Sun   I can describe how the Earth moves I can identify daylight and nighttime I can identify when it is daytime on one side of world, it is nighttime on the other.

What do you think moves? The sun or the Earth? Learning Objective: I can describe the Earth and its movement around the Sun I’m going to select one child to hold the globe and another to hold the torch. What do you think moves? The sun or the Earth? The Earth moves and not the torch. Lets look at the areas/continents that are covered in darkness – what does this mean? What about the areas that are covered with light?

Can you make it daytime in Europe? Learning Objective: I can describe the Earth and its movement around the Sun Can you make it daytime in Europe? Africa? When it is daytime in those places, where in the world is it night time?

We will be creating their own Sun and Earth movement wheel. Learning Objective: I can describe the Earth and its movement around the Sun We will be creating their own Sun and Earth movement wheel. Sun Earth

Lesson 2: Learning Objective: I can gain knowledge of the planets Do you know the planets? Listen to The Solar System song - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2prtmPEjOc

Learning Objective: I understand that the Sun is a star Success Criteria I can share facts about stars   I can share prior and new knowledge about the Sun I can create a replica of the Sun I can work cooperatively in a team

Learning Objective: I understand that the Sun is a star Knowledge Harvest! What do you know about stars? How are the stars like our Sun? Have you ever looked at stars through a telescope?

Learning Objective: I understand that the Sun is a star Stars seen in a city Can you see lots of stars or not Why do you think we can not see lots of stars?

Learning Objective: I understand that the Sun is a star There are actually billions of stars in space but because we are surrounding by so many lights in the city (street lights, lights from buildings, cars) we don’t see many.

Learning Objective: I understand that the Sun is a star Stars in the country – areas with not a lot of light Is this different from the city? How is it different? What makes it different?

Learning Objective: I understand that the Sun is a star What do we know about the sun?

Learning Objective: I understand that the Sun is a star Did you know that the Sun is a star? Unlike other stars, the Sun is close enough to us for us to feel its heat. Our Sun is just one star amongst billions of others.

Learning Objective: I understand that the Sun is a star Sun Fact Sheet Go to Sun powerpoint in file

Learning Objective: I understand that the Sun is a star Sun Fact Sheet Sun

Learning Objective: I understand that the Sun is a star Task time! *** Independently complete Sun Fact sheet – recalling information about the sun. Once chn have finished fact sheet, can support creating a Sun with other chn. ** Complete Sun Fact sheet – recalling information about the sun. Once chn have finished fact sheet, can support creating a Sun with other chn. * As a team, work together to complete facts about the Sun. Complete facts and create a sun using paper/crepe paper on A3 paper.

Learning Objective: I understand that the Sun is a star Success Criteria I can share facts about stars   I can share prior and new knowledge about the Sun I can create a replica of the Sun I can work cooperatively in a team

Learning Objective: I understand that the Sun is a star Plenary Share something new you learnt today about the Sun.

Lesson 3: Learning Objective: I can recall sources of light and non-light sources SPLAT!

Learning Objective: I can compare day and night Success Criteria I understand the Earth spins on an axis   I can identify the difference between day and night I can identify where in the world it is daylight I can justify my answers I can work collaboratively.

Day and Night Read Branley’s What Makes Day and Night - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYWAq2GfI8Y

Learning Objective: I can compare day and night Question….. Does the Earth move around the Sun or does the Sun move around the Earth ? The Earth goes around the Sun.

Day and Night The Earth spins on its AXIS Learning Objective: I can compare day and night Day and Night The Earth spins on its AXIS It takes 24 hours for the Earth to do one complete spin. How many day or days is 24 hours? The Earth spins around once per day.

Learning Objective: I can compare day and night

DAYTIME NIGHTIME When the Earth faces the Sun, it is Learning Objective: I can compare day and night When the Earth faces the Sun, it is When the Earth faces away from the Sun, it is DAYTIME NIGHTIME

The Earth & Beyond : Day & Night SUNLIGHT The Earth spins on its axis once every 24 hours.

The Earth spins in an ANTICLOCKWISE direction. This makes the sun appear to rise in the ____ and set in the _____ EAST WEST

One person is going to be the Earth. Here is a map of the Earth. Learning Objective: I can compare day and night One person is going to be the Earth. Here is a map of the Earth. Let’s find Abu Dhabi – which continent is Abu Dhabi? Do you think it is day or night in Abu Dhabi? How do you know – prove it!

Learning Objective: I can compare day and night Have child rotate slowly in a counterclockwise motion, until their left arm is pointed to the Sun. Ask chn if they think it is sunrise or still night. Child continues the counterclockwise rotation until he/she faces the Sun directly. What time is now in their town? Ask student to rotate a little more. Have them stop when their right arm is pointed toward the Sun. What time of day it is? (Sunset)

Learning Objective: I understand that the Sun is a star Task time! You will be getting into pairs and completing this task as a team. One child is the Sun, the other The Earth. You have to say whether it is daytime or nighttime and where on their maps it is day or night.

Learning Objective: I can compare day and night Success Criteria I understand the Earth spins on an axis   I can identify the difference between day and night I can identify where in the world it is daylight I can justify my answers I can work collaboratively.

Learning Objective: I can compare day and night Plenary Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzanaJkvQks to re-address day and night
