Seasons. What Causes Seasons? Seasons are caused by the tilt of the earth’s axis as it moves around the sun. Seasons happen because the Earth is tilted.

Unit 1. The Earth

Index 1. All about Planet Earth 2. Earth movements 3. The seasons 4. A living planet 5. The climate 6. The terrestrial crust 7. Atmospheric phenomena 8. Ecosystems (biomes)

1. All about Planet Earth Let’s see how much you know about our planet… What does the planet look like? How long does it take to orbit the sun? And around the sun? How long does it take to rotate on an imaginary axis? How many continents and oceans does the Earth have? Do you remember their names? How many moons does the Earth have? Do you know de distance from the Earth to the Sun? What is the composition of the Earth? Is the Earth the biggest planet? Is the only place where life exists?

Fabiola Martínez Castillo How many planets are there in our Solar System? Where are the Earth and the moon? Do you know their names? The Solar System is made up of a star and celestial bodies (planets, satellites, asteroids, and comets) that orbit it. The star in our Solar System is the Sun. Fabiola Martínez Castillo

GUESS: What is The Sun? THE SUN IS… 1. A STAR 2. A PLANET 3. A SATELLITE

GUESS: What are the names of the planets in the Solar System???

Fabiola Martínez Castillo Contients and oceans Artic ocean North America EUROPE ASIA Atlantic ocean Pacific ocean Pacific ocean AFRICA South America AUSTRALIA Atlantic Ocean Indian ocean ANTARCTICA Fabiola Martínez Castillo

THE EARTH IS ROUND AND HAS TWO PARTS, CALLED HEMISPHERES NORTHERN HEMISPHERE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE

THE EARTH HAS TWO POLES, BIG AREAS OF ICE AND SNOW NORTHERN POLE SOUTHERN POLE

GUESS: WHAT IS THIS? NORTHERN POLE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE SOUTHERN POLE

WELL DONE!!

1. All about our Planet Earth Moons: 1 Year: 365 Days Day: 24 hours Distance from the Sun: 3rd planet from the sun, 93 million miles The only planet where life exists. Geography of Earth The Earth has seven large land masses called continents. The continents include Africa, Asia, North America, South America, Europe, Oceania, and Antarctica. The surface of the planet is approximately 71% water and contains (5) five oceans, including the Arctic, Atlantic, Indian, Pacific and Southern Composition of the Earth The Earth is composed of a number of layers. On the outside is a rocky layer called the Earth's crust. Below this we can find the mantle followed by the outer core and the inner core. The Earth's Moon The Earth has one moon or natural satellite. You've probably seen it! The Earth's moon is the fifth largest moon in the solar system. Fabiola Martínez Castillo

Fabiola Martínez Castillo 2. Earth movements Fabiola Martínez Castillo

Fabiola Martínez Castillo ROTATION As it rotates, some places are iluminated by the Sun, day time, while others remain dark, night time. Fabiola Martínez Castillo

2. The Earth’s movements ROTATION THE EARTH TURNS ON ITS AXIS. DAY IT TAKES 24 HOURS TO COMPLETE A ROUND NIGHT

REVOLUTION

2. The Earth’s movements REVOLUTION THE EARTH ORBITS THE SUN. IT TAKES 1 YEAR TO COMPLETE A ROUND SEASONS

2. The Earth’s movements AXIS The Earth’s position in relation to the Sun changes throughout the year because it has a tilted axis. The Sun’s rays reach the Northern Hemisphere at different times of year.

The Sun’s rays are more intense Earth’s movements The Sun’s rays are more intense

Earth’s movements The intensity of the sunlight received on the Earth is different at different times of the year.

Moon movement THE MOON ORBITS THE EARTH. It is a satellite. IT TAKES 28 DAYS TO COMPLETE A ROUND

GUESS: WHAT ARE THESE? WINTER AUTUMM SPRING SUMMER

Fabiola Martínez Castillo 3. The seasons It starts on the 21st of March. The daylight hours are longer than the night and the weather is temperate and rainy. It starts on the 21st of June. The daylight hours are longer than the night and the weather is hot and dry. It starts on the 23rd of September. The daylight hours are shorter than the night and the weather is cool and rainy. It starts on the 21st of December. The daylight hours are shorter than the night and the weather is very cold. Fabiola Martínez Castillo

Fabiola Martínez Castillo 2. The Earth’s movements 2. The Earth’s movements The Earth’s movements are two: rotation and revolution. Rotation: the Earth turns on its axis. It takes 24 hours (1 day) to complete a round. This movement causes day and night. Revolution: The Earth orbits the Sun. It takes 365 days (1 year) to complete a round. This movement causes the seasons because the intensity of the sunlight received on the Earth is different at different times of the year. The Earth’s position in relation to the Sun changes throughout the year because it has a tilted axis. The Sun’s rays reach the Northern Hemisphere at different times of year. That is why we have opposite seasons in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The seasons: Spring: It starts on the 21st of March. The daylight hours are longer than the night and the weather is temperate and rainy. Summer: It starts on the 21st of June. The daylight hours are longer than the night and the weather is hot and dry. Autumn:It starts the 23rd of September. The daylight hours are shorter than the night and the weather is cool and rainy. Winter: It starts on the 21st of December. The daylight hours are shorter than the night and the weather is very cold. Fabiola Martínez Castillo
