Welcome! Flinn Scientific Enhance your Science Curriculum with POGIL™ Activities!

Today’s Workshop What is POGIL? Groups and Roles Let’s look at some POGILs! Gas Variables Limiting and Excess Reactants Meiosis Biological Molecules (Biochemistry) Connections with Labs and Demos

POGIL Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) Increase problem solving, content mastery, and analytical reasoning skills. Series of guiding questions used to interpret data and trends.

POGIL Chemistry Topics (Green Handout) Classification of Matter Isotopes Ions Average Atomic Mass Coulombic Attraction Electron Energy and Light Electron Configurations Cracking the Periodic Table Code Periodic Trends Naming Ionic Compounds Polyatomic Ions Naming Molecular Compounds Naming Acids Molecular Geometry Types of Chemical Reactions Relative Mass and the Mole Mole Ratios Limiting and Excess Reactants Gas Variables Saturated and Unsaturated Solutions Solubility Molarity Calorimetry Bond Energy Equilibrium Acids and Bases Strong vs. Weak Acids Calculating pH Oxidation and Reduction The Activity Series Batteries

POGIL Biology Topics (Green Handout) Safety First Scientific Inquiry Experimental Variables Analyzing and Interpreting Scientific Data Properties of Water Biological Molecules Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells Organelles in Eukaryotic Cells Cell Size Membrane Structure and Function Transport in Cells Photosynthesis and Respiration The Cell Cycle Mitosis Meiosis DNA Structure and Replication Evidence for Evolution Biological Classification Evolution and Selection Nutrient Cycles Ecological Relationships Biomes of North America Energy Transfer in Living Organisms Ecological Pyramids Succession Population Growth The Spread of Pathogens Human Blood Cell Typing The Circulatory System

POGIL Roles Example Group students and assign roles. For example, in a group of three, you can assign a Manager – In charge of the group and orchestrating who reads the POGIL out loud. The instructor will answer questions from the manager only. Recorder – In charge of summarizing the main points of the activity and individual group discussions. Turns in a separate summary to the teacher at the end of the period (great way to check for student understanding). Presenter – At designated stopping points, this student stands up and shares his or her group’s answers and reasoning.

Check out the POGIL website for more information! https://pogil.org/

POGIL Classroom Ideas POGIL can be used to introduce a new topic. And also to solidify concepts from a class activity such as a demonstration or lab.

Who has used POGIL? Who has used POGIL? How have you used it in your classroom?

POGIL – Gas Variables (from page 1 of purple packet)

POGIL – Gas Variables (from page 3 of purple packet)

POGIL Class Discussion Points While groups are working, to get your students’ attention, you can raise your hand. Students can then quiet down and raise their hands too. Other options to get the attention of the class are to ring a bell or horn . Does anyone have methods they use in their classroom that they would like to share? .

POGIL – Gas Variables (from page 4 of purple packet)

POGIL Activity Great student-centered learning activity. Students are asked to interpret and recognize trends. Models and data illustrate key concepts. Can be used to replace a lecture. Have students self-discover the concept through models and graphs.

POGIL Activity – Gas Variables (Teacher Notes) Answers and examples in italics:

POGIL Activity – Gas Variables (Teacher Notes) Learning Objectives and Prerequisites:

POGIL Activity – Gas Variables (Teacher Notes) Assessment Questions and Responses:

POGIL Let’s try some POGILs and hands-on extensions! Biology Activities Bio Biological Molecule POGIL Work in Groups of Three (Manager, Recorder, and Presenter)! Hands-on Meiosis Activity Come explore a hands-on extension of the Meiosis POGIL! Chemistry Activities Limiting and Excess Reactants POGIL Work in Groups of Three (Manager, Recorder, and Presenter)! Hands-on Gas Law Activities Come explore hands-on extensions of the Gas Law POGIL!

POGIL Let’s try some POGILs and hands-on extensions! Gas Law Activity Stations 1. Draw a picture of the demonstration/activity. 2. What variables are changing in the activity (P, V, and/or T)? 3. What is the relationship between the variables? Do they both increase? Decrease? Or as one increases does the other decrease? And vice versa? 4. What variables stay constant in the activity (P,V, and/or T)? 5. Whose law is this and why? Discuss how stations can be made more personalized to each demonstration. This is just a generic template for our practice.

The POGIL Books Include Teacher Resources with: Learning Objectives Prerequisites Answers and Tips Assessment Questions For AP* POGIL Books, Alignment with AP* Framework CD with Electronic Student Copies

POGIL Applications Now that you’ve seen some examples of POGIL, how would you like to incorporate it into your classroom?
