Pre-K / Kindergarten Standard HPD 3: Children will understand healthy and safe living practices HPD3c: Discusses and utilizes appropriate safety procedures PEK5.1: Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings. Description: Students recognize and follow rules, directions, and safety procedures. They work cooperatively and respectfully with others, regardless of personal differences.

Need To Know Many molesters know this and purposely dress nicely so they can more easily lure children. If a child is lost or has no trusted adult nearby, everyone is a stranger to that child. How is your child going to find help without talking to strangers? Strangers will not try and abduct a child with cameras around The child and the parent should have a secret word to identify the validity in an emergency situation Children should know their contact information and parent’s name for a dangerous situation

Nice To Know Every 40 seconds in the United States, a child is reported missing or abducted. That translates to over 2,000 children per day (under 18 years of age) or 800,000 per year. Of abducted children who are ultimately murdered, 74 percent are dead within three hours of the abduction (State of Washington's Office of the Attorney General; National Center of Missing and Exploited Children) Of child victims of "stereotypical kidnappings, "40 percent are killed, 4 percent are never found, 71 percent are by a stranger and 29 percent are by a slight acquaintance." In 1999 there were over 115 "stereotypical kidnappings" of children in the United States (Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway, and Thrownaway Children, October 2002) 797,500 children younger than eighteen were reported missing in one year. The Average amount of children being reported missing is 2,185

Nice To Know Cont’d 203,900 of these children were victims of the child’s own family abducting them 58, 200 children were abducted by someone outside their family Since 1984, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children recovered more than 169,000 children out of the 182,000 reported missing cases Number for the NCMEC (1-800-THE-LOST) since 1984 the hotline has had more than 3.4 million calls. In the last quarter of 2011 the hotline received 558 on average child abduction related calls per day

Essential Skills After the Lesson the students should be able to… Define a stranger Define a Dangerous Situation Identify/Learn Safety Steps First Step: Saying “NO!” Second Step: Leaving the Situation Third Step: Tell and ADULT you can TRUST
