Presentation transcript:

Ephesians 4:1-6 1 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, 3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

III. The Making of a Church – The Pursuit with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love…(4:2) A. “With All Humility…” What is humility? “lowliness of mind.” “a right and reasonable opinion of one’s own importance, rank and dignity.”

III. The Making of a Church – The Pursuit with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love…(4:2) B. “with all…gentleness…” What is gentleness? “mild, gentle” “power under control.”

Luke 23:33-34 “33 When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. 34 But Jesus was saying, ‘Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.’ And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.”

Proverbs 16:32 “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit, than he who captures a city.”

Gentleness Gentleness is an aspect of the “fruit of the Spirit” (Galatians 5:23) and therefore is an indication of the Spirit of Christ at work in you. Gentleness is the opposite of revenge or vindictiveness. Gentleness is a yielding to the Word and Will of God, regardless of what the outcome may be. Gentleness is a willingness to forgive and restore those who have sinned against you or the church (Galatians 6:1).

Gentleness Gentleness is not responding to lost sinners according to their sin, but with calm yet persistent presentation of the gospel. Gentleness is the practice of Christ-likeness, who was/is “gentle.” Jesus said this of Himself in Matthew 11:29, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.”

III. The Making of a Church – The Pursuit with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love…(4:2) C. “…with patience…” What is patience? “to be of long or enduring temper” “long-fused”

1 Thessalonians 5:14-15 “14 We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people.”

Chrysostom Speaking of patience: “It is the spirit which has the power to take revenge, but never does.”

III. The Making of a Church – The Pursuit with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love…(4:2) D. “…showing tolerance for one another in love…” What is showing tolerance for one another? “holding oneself up against another person” “the practice of accepting people just as they are…” What is… “showing tolerance for one another in love”? “love” – an unconditional act of the will that seeks the highest good for another, regardless of the cost and all to the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8a “4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails….”
