Bellwork: 1.Grab one of each handout on the left. As I continue with Bradbury’s Farenheit 451 this morning, think about the characters. How would you describe Clarisse, Mildred, Guy Montag, and Captain Beaty? Do they remind you of other characters you’ve encountered? Real people (news or life)? Do you like them? How do you feel about the way they are interacting with each other? Each of you will have to “Say Something” about the text.

Reading rate Read, at a comfortable pace, for ten minutes. Do nothing else but read. Be sure to mark the page on which you start. Then, count the amount of pages you have read. Then divide the pages by ten. This is your rate. Count the amount of pages you have and divide by your reading rate. Divide minutes by 60 to give you hours.

Library!: Challenge- Find a quote that reminds you of F451! Look for a relevant read in your book. Write out the quote and explanations before you leave the library. Documentation- Relevant Reads: Find at least one relevant read quote before the end of Silent Reading in the library, and write an explanation of why it is a relevant read. A Relevant Read is: a phrase, sentence, or passage that gives the reader something to ponder.   a passage that the reader relates to on a personal level. a quote that expresses a “message about life.”   a sentence or passage that is extremely well written—providing an example of a literary device or writing technique.   It does not have to be all of these at once.   Explanation should not exceed 100 words (50-100). Include Word Count for each!

Example Example:   “I held it over my heart. Mrs. Worth smiled. ‘That’s where a book should be carried’”(136).   The idea of a book being something that can nurture someone’s soul is hinted at here and numerous other points in Close to Famous. This quotation makes me realize that our favorite books, and the ones we learn the most from, are the ones that we relate to on a personal level. If a young reader read this passage, it might encourage him to pick books on topics that he can connect with personally. Word Count: 74

Book Graffiti Each day on our return from the library, you will pick one of your quotes and put it on our graffiti wall; we’ll be doing this on post-its from now on. You’ll turn your completed relevant reads on the second to last day of class. Put a quote up!

Feminism Criticism: Trifles Read the play through on your own. Your job will be to modernize this play, but keep the meaning intact. So first, you need to decide and agree what the main message is in this text. You don’t need to keep the same character names. At least 5 mins- will stop you at 10. You want script written before break. You’’l have 20 minutes to finish before we start.
