Media Industry Sectors Shannon Macleod

Television Television (better known as just TV) is seen in many houses world-wide. It is a system where you can view TV programmes as a source of entertainment. In better words: ‘a system for converting visual images (with sound) into electrical signals, transmitting them by radio or other means, and displaying them electronically on a screen.’ An example of a TV company is the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). They are a public service that show the news and TV programmes but they have started to expand to the US. The BBC have produced many shows such as: EastEnders, Sherlock, Doctor Who and more.

Film A film is a scripted video of a story/event, that is usually over an hour long. There are hundreds released each year and they can be seen in cinema (when first released) or on TV. An example of a film company is Paramount. Paramount pictures are very well known for the movies and TV shows they produce. They are based in Hollywood, California but their work can be seen world wide. They have produced movies and TV shows such as: Forrest Gump, Mission Impossible, Star Trek, Frasier and many more.

Radio Radio is where audio is broadcasted from radio stations. You can hear the news, music and more through it. BBC Radio own a huge amount of radio stations/shows and thousands f people listen to them daily. The most listened to station has to be BBC Radio 1. There is a whole range of music to be heard on there and many people play it in the car.

Music Music is a combination of vocals and/or instruments. It is so diverse and many people bond over their joint music taste. An example of a music company/record label is Syco. It is shared between the original owner (Simon Cowell) and Sony. They hire musicians and singers to create and release music. Their artists have released songs such as: What makes you beautiful (One Direction), Work (Fifth Harmony), Troublemaker (Olly Murs) and many more.

Print Print is a form of media that is in its physical form rather than online. A newspaper is an example of this. The Trinity Mirror is a newspaper company that owns companies that, you guessed it, publish newspapers everyday. It is Britain’s largest newspaper publisher and is worth millions. It owns newspapers such as: Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror, People and more.

Advertising and Marketing Advertising is a part of marketing and it is where a piece of media is created to raise awareness about a company or product. This can be in the form of a poster, video, audio and so on. Amaze is an example of an advertising and marketing company. They have produced adverts for: Toyota, Unilever and Coca-Cola.

Interactive Media Interactive media is, obviously, a type of media you can interact with. This can be anything from graphic texts, moving images to websites in general and apps. King is a games app developer and have created a lot of games for all ages. They have created games like Candy Crush, Bubble Witch and Papa Pear.
