A Different kind of Jesus Mark 2:15-17 15 Later, Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. (There were many people of this kind among Jesus’ followers.) 16 But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with such scum?” 17 When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”

A Different kind of Jesus Jesus acknowledges those whom others didn’t… those on the margins.

A Different kind of Jesus Jesus cares for those whom others didn’t… tax collectors fishermen widows children demon-possessed physically sick poor weak sinners prostitutes adulterers the Samaritans

Yet…something happened.

The men who bought the slaves were Christians. Christian ministers, quoting the Christian apostle Paul, gave the sanction of religion to the system of slavery. from Jesus and the Disinherited by Howard Thurman

A Different kind of Christian

Even in the church there is segregation. Some seventy years or more ago you were freed by a man who was NOT a professing Christian… during all the period since then you have lived in a Christian nation in which you were segregated, lynched, and burned. Even in the church there is segregation. from Jesus and the Disinherited by Howard Thurman

A Different kind of Christian

It cannot be denied that too often the weight of the Christian movement has been on the side of the strong and powerful and against the weak and oppressed—this, despite the gospel. from Jesus and the Disinherited by Howard Thurman

Jesus invites us to be a different kind of Christian
