Fractions Box Trails Objective: To be able to work out Fractions of amounts

Starter Objective: To be able to work out Fractions of amounts What sum do you do to work out half (1/2) of a number? For example, half of 100 is 50, but what sum gets you to that answer? ÷ 2 What sum do you do to work out one-third (1/3) of a number? For example, one-third of 15 is 5, but what sum gets you to that answer? ÷ 3 What sum do you do to work out 1/4 of a number? ÷ 4 What sum do you do to work out 1/5 of a number? ÷ 5 What sum do you do to work out 1/6 of a number? ÷ 6 What is the pattern here?  Always divide by the bottom number!

Fractions Box Trails So 1/8 is half of 1/4 Objective: To be able to work out Fractions of amounts Fractions Box Trails What Fraction is shaded here? What about here? 1 4 Imagine we drew on some more lines… 1 8 So 1/8 is half of 1/4

Fractions Box Trails So 1/24 is half of 1/12 Objective: To be able to work out Fractions of amounts Fractions Box Trails What Fraction is shaded here? What about here? 1 12 Imagine we drew on some more lines… 1 24 So 1/24 is half of 1/12

Fractions Box Trails 1 4 1 8 1 12 1 24 1 5 1 10 1 8 1 16 ÷ 2 ÷ 2 ÷ 2 Objective: To be able to work out Fractions of amounts Fractions Box Trails 1 4 ÷ 2 1 8 1 12 ÷ 2 1 24 1 5 ÷ 2 1 10 1 8 1 16 ÷ 2

Fractions Box Trails ÷2 ÷2 15 30 96 108 60 x3 x3 ÷2 x4 x9 ÷5 ÷2 45 90 Objective: To be able to work out Fractions of amounts Fractions Box Trails Start with the number in the centre, work out the fractions of it step-by-step… ÷2 ÷2 15 30 96 108 60 x3 x3 ÷2 x4 x9 ÷5 ÷2 45 90 120 24 12 x3 ÷3 x5 ÷2 x2 100 20 40 80 36

Objective: To be able to work out Fractions of amounts Plenary So how would you answer this question – you will have to use ideas we have learnt about today… Which is biggest? 3/4 of 48 2/3 of 60 1/4 of 48 = 12 1/3 of 60 = 20 (Divide by 3) (Divide by 4) 3/4 of 48 = 36 2/3 of 60 = 40 (Multiply by 3) (Multiply by 2)

Summary We have looked at patterns involving Fractions Objective: To be able to work out Fractions of amounts Summary We have looked at patterns involving Fractions We have seen how to work out some Fractions, having been told others We have looked at how to find a Fraction of an amount
