Overview Mission Statement, Task, Prototype Structure, 3 Scenarios, Experimental Methods, Experimental Results, Suggested UI Changes, Summary Application that allows you to search recipes and build collaborative shopping lists based on these recipes

Mission Develop an application which helps people find recipes tailored to their preferences, quickly and efficiently shop for these recipes, and share their list with other family members.

Representative Tasks Finding a recipe Sharing a list Shopping from a list

Lo-fi Prototype Structure

Scenarios

Scenario 1 - Finding a Recipe Asked a user to find a recipe and add ingredients to list.

Scenario 2 - Sharing a List Asked the users to share a list. Asked the users to share a list

Scenario 3 - Shopping from a List Asked the user to check items off the list as they shopped.

Experimental Method

3 participants in a grocery store

2 were shopping for their families and 1 was shopping for themselves. 2 shopping for family, 1 shopping for themself

Our main tasks were collaborative shopping lists and recipe searching- things that are often associated with families BUT we also wanted to cater to individuals But why…

Efficiency in completing tasks We measured # of mistakes # of questions Efficiency in completing tasks 2 shopping for family, 1 shopping for themself

Experimental Results

? ? #1 Unclear what was scrollable

? ? “I feel like I have to click everything.” “I didn’t know I could click more than one…”

? ? #2 Share feature seems like too much work…

? ? “…if I'm at the grocery store, I'll text her and ask her what she needs….” “…you don’t really think about what you need from the grocery store until someone asks you….”

? ? #3 Share feature is confusing

? ? “How do I share my list with people who aren’t there??”

? ? #4 People don’t know how to add recipe ingredients to the list

? ? “…Wait what? What do the checks mean? Can I uncheck them?….” “…How do I put them into my list? There isn’t an add button….”

? ? #5 Not everyone has a smart phone

? ? “my wife doesn't have a smart phone…”

Suggested UI Changes

! ! #1 Add a key word search, or categories for recipe results “Recipes need to be alphabetical and need some sort of order – they need sort options”

! ! #2 Make scrolling more apparent on the filters page

! ! #3 Have a recently added section in shopping list “I want to easily see what other people recently added…”

! ! #4 If a contributor is adding an item to the list, make that item get approval first. “I don’t want my kids to add a bunch of junk to my shopping list…”

! ! #5 Ability to skip the filter - or add the ability to select more than one option. “I want to be able to look up Thai food and Mexican food during the same search.”

! ! #6 A way for users to add to a list If they have don’t have a smart phone “I should to be able to select from my contacts or something…”

Summary of Talk

Tasks were easy to carry out Needs more flexibility
