University of Massachusetts Boston Only public research university in Boston, with a special commitment to urban and global engagement In Fall 2014, of the 16,000+ undergraduate students, 52% were students of color Asian Americans (Vietnamese, Chinese, Khmer and South Indians) were 11.6% of the full-time undergraduate students Commuter campus 11.6% Asian Americans qualifies us to be an AANAPISI.

Capacity Building through… Curriculum Development Internal and External Partnerships API Research Grant Funding Digital Storytelling in Asian American Studies National Summit This afternoon I’d to share four areas in which the AANAPISI funding has allowed us to build capacity.

UMB’s Integrated Model UMB chose to use an integrated model instead of a cohort model for the delivery of services to our students. As you see by the figure here, the services provided by UMB is like a three-legged stool. The inputs are from the Asian American Studies Program, the Institute for Asian American Studies and the UMB Student Support Services. Our AANAPISI program builds connections, relationships, and partnerships on campus and with the local community.

Digital Storytelling in Asian American Studies National Summit Asian American Studies Media Literacy Course at UMB (AsAmSt 370) APAHE 2014 UMB Student Presentations Significant Impact of Digital Stories Two AANAPISI Directors (Mt. San Antonio College & Mission College) inquired about bringing the digital story process to their campuses AANAPISI Supplemental Grant Funding secured Year-long, three phase collaboration Culminating in Digital Story Telling National Summit (June 18, 2015)

Digital Story Introduction 19 Digital Stories were co-produced as a result of this collaboration Stories highlighted themes of family migration, war, violence, intergenerational dynamics, social justice, disability access, health disparities, race and gender inequality, and other important intersecting issues. Mekemke Lavaki’s story along with three other Tongan students from Mt. San Antonio College are the first Pacific Islander digital story along to be part of the UMB archives We will be highlighting Meke’s story today but her story along with three other Tongan’s from Mt. San Antonio College

Conclusion Capacity Building has occurred: UMB: because of new awareness of the value and impact of culturally competent advising, career, disability, and counselling services In the Greater Boston Community: increased number of college visits and programming for high schools and community based agencies which has strengthen the odds of potential students attending UMB. Outreach to Asian American community festivals and celebrations enhances the chances of UMB as an option for higher education Research grants have contributed much needed empirical and applied research to better serve Asian American underserved and under-represented students.
