Shakespeare’s Theater Task 3

Shakespeare’s Theater Shakespeare joined the Lord Chamberlein’s Men in 1594. The name was later changed to The King’s Men. After the death of Queen Elizabeth, the company was awarded a new patent by the new king, King James I.

Shakespeare’s Theater Young boys played the female roles in all of Shakespeare’s plays because women were not allowed to act on the public stage. Did You Know? The first woman to appear in a Shakespearean play did so in 1660 – 44 years after Shakespeare’s death. William Shakespeare got his ideas for his plays from various sources..daily life, history, songs, folk tales, mythology, etc.

The Globe Theater The original Globe Theatre was built in 1599 by the playing company,  Lord Chamberlain's Men, to which Shakespeare  belonged, and was destroyed by fire on June 29th, 1613.

The stage itself was relatively bare The stage itself was relatively bare. For the most part, playwrights used vivid words instead of scenery to picture the scene onstage.

Wealthy patrons had the pleasure of sitting in actual seats. Audience Members “Groundlings” stood in the pit section of the theater during performances. They were too poor to pay to sit in the other areas of the theater. Wealthy patrons had the pleasure of sitting in actual seats.

The Globe A second Globe Theatre was built on the same site by June 1614 and closed in 1642. A modern reconstruction of the Globe, named "Shakespeare's Globe”, opened in 1997 approximately 750 feet from the site of the original theater
