Manufacturing Points: Describing manufacturing Comparing custom and mass production Analyzing manufacturing Organization

What is Manufacturing? What is manufactured? Name 3 examples of something that is mfg. Are they individually made or made in large quantities?

Answer the following questions in your Engineering journal What is a custom home? What is a custom paint job? What is a customized computer? What is custom jewlery?

To build or produce a final product from raw materials. Manufacturing To build or produce a final product from raw materials. Manufacturing computers

What are raw materials? What are the basic materials that make the product? For example: Cotton for a shirt Plastic for a phone Wire for computers What are the parts and pieces that make the final product?

Practice What are the raw materials in a computer? List all the raw materials that make up an airplane.

Answer the following questions in your Engineering journal Who invented the printing press? Who was Henry Ford? How do you manufacture millions of products quickly and cheaply?

Manufacturing Cutting- making small pieces from larger ones. Shaping- form something into a desired shape Joining- two or more pieces together. Safety- is it made safely? Product safe? Assembly- combining the pieces to make product. Finishing- getting the product ready for customer Quality Control- is the product or process working to accomplish task

Let’s try it- Practice Watch the How’s It Made video and describe how the manufacturing process fits into the ways products are made. For Example: Cutting- the labels for the Pringles can come together in one large roll. A blade cuts them into the size of the can.

Compare the two Rolls Royce vs. Chevrolet Which one would you like to own and why? The difference is how they are made

Custom vs Mass Production Custom manufacturing involves: Labor intensive Individuality More expensive More time Not mass produced

Mass Production Mass Production involves: Lower costs Automation Quantity Less individuality Interchangable Parts Less time

Prefect Check Do they have the questions and responses Day, date, and points On-Task???

Let’s Compare Rolls Royce and Ford Give examples of mass production and customization for these two product lines Can you do the same for homes and jewlery?

Why?? How fast? Assembly lines make a car a minute Ford, Chevy, Subaru, Toyota, Honda Rolls Royce, Bentley, Bugatti: take at least three and a half months. Why??

Both custom and mass production manufacturing have advantages and disadvantages Name and advantage and a disadvantage of custom manufacturing. List advantages and disadvantages of mass production

Prefect Check Questions and answers???? Great Job!!!!!!

Custom Manufacturing Advantages: Individual design and product Detail and intrecasy Disadvantages: Higher cost-labor, parts Lower quantities produced

Mass Production Advantages: lower costs Interchanable parts High quantities produced Automated

Disadvantages: Less individuality Labor?? Mass Production Disadvantages: Less individuality Labor??

Corporate or Corporations What are they? Ever heard that term? Word Wheel Time: White the word Corporation in the center of the wheel. Synonyms or short phrases

Manufacturing Corporate Structure In your manufacturing company, what departments would you need? How would you organize your company?

Corporate Structure Research and Development (R&D) New and better ideas Production Manufacturing engineering Marketing Advertising and selling to customers Quality control- does it work safely Distribution- getting it to customers

Independent Practice Think of you product brochure. What would you corporate structure look like for your product or process? Write a statement for each of the different departments: R&D Production Marketing Quality Control

Prefect Check Questions and answers???? Great Job!!!!!!

Prefect Check Questions and answers???? Great Job!!!!!!

Show What You Know Answer the following questions in your engineering journal. What is custom manufacturing? What is mass production? Give an example of each. Name a department in a manufacturing firm.
