Newspapers

Newspapers  There are two main types of newspapers: the «popular» papers and the «quality» papers. The popular papers are less in size, with many pictures, big headlines and short articles. They are easy to read. They are such papers as «Daily Express», «Daily mail», «Daily Mirror», «Daily Star», «The Sun» and others.

The «quality» papers are for more serious readership. These papers are bigger in size, with larger articles and more detailed information. The «quality» papers are — «The Times», «Daily Telegraph», «The Guardian», «Financial Times», «The Independent».

The Times The Times is a British daily national newspaper based in London. It began in 1785.

The Guardian The Guardian is a British national daily newspaper. Founded in 1821.

Magazines

Magazines Brian Braithwaite, former director of National Magazines and founder-publisher of Harper's and Queen, Cosmopolitan and Country Living, gives us the magazines he believes have been the most influential in British history.

The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine (1852–1890) Launched by Samuel Beeton, husband of Mrs Beeton, this changed the face of women's magazines of the period. It opened up an untapped readership with a magazine aimed at the ordinary housewife.

Picture Post (1938-1957) Margaret Lockwood, a famous English actress The weekly photo-journalistic magazine that made an important impact during the war and in post-war years covering serious social topics. Hard-edged, never dull, it was a great force in magazine publishing.

Punch (1841-2002) It is a satirical magazine and one of the first British magazine brands. Managed through the years by a succession of famous editors including Henry Mayhew, Malcolm Muggeridge and Alan Coren, it stoped to publish.

The Economist (1843-) A journal that has always set in the financial world. Since the second world war it has considerably extended its global influence. In many ways it represents the gold standard in heavyweight magazine publishing.

Radio Times (1923-) A British classic for 86 years that has stood the test of time. Reliable, readable and authoritative. As British as the BBC itself.

Cosmopolitan (1972-) Influential? Now published in 68 countries, it burst on to the British scene like a whirlwind. Interesting, modern and contemporary it changed the face of young women's magazine publishing, wiping out many of its contemporary topics.

Country Life (1897-) So British you almost have to stand up when it comes into the room. The glossy's glossy and the standard of luxury lifestyle magazine publishing.
