The Year 1 Team We work together closely to ensure both classes have the same experiences. We share The Nest teaching space where the classes often work together. Throughout the year there are activities where the classes mix, for example; PE lessons, Art & Craft days and the Nativity.

Reading at home Reading books will come home everyday and can be changed every morning. Reading record books should be in school every day. The children bring books home at a level they can read confidently so they can focus on comprehension and understanding. Please use the ideas at the front of their Reading Record to help with this. It is really important that the children read books other than their school reading book for example, library books, comics, picture books, e-books.

Reading at school Most children are now ready to work in small groups with their reading. This maximises the amount of time we can spend reading with the children. We teach them important new reading skills and focus on developing their comprehension. We keep a record of their progress in school and will share this with you at pupil progress meetings. We will contact you before then if we have any concerns. If there is an area of reading we would like you help your child with we will make a note in their reading record . We assess the children regularly and will move them up a book band when they are ready. Please be aware it is not a race through the scheme! We want confident readers, able to fully understand the story and enjoy their reading.

Home Learning Spellings The children will bring home a spelling sheet once a week. We would like them to practise the words daily. They should follow the “look, say, cover, write, check” method. The sheets should be kept at home in their spelling folder. They do not need to be returned to school. We do not test the children but they will be expected to use the words correctly in their writing. Other Activities We will occasionally send home other activities to support the children's learning and improve their independence.

Our Curriculum Our curriculum map is in the curriculum section of the school webpage.

Communication Please let us know if you have any questions, worries or concerns. One of us will always be available on the school gate at the end of the day. You can leave a message at the office or send us an email. Please be aware we are very busy at the beginning of the day so will only be available in an emergency at this time. You can always leave a message with the office and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Partnership Thank you for coming today. We are really looking forward to working with you and your child throughout the year to ensure they have the best education possible. The best learning happens when parents and teachers work together as a team. Thank you for coming today. This is just the beginning of our partnership!
