WESELPA Mission The West End SELPA team works in collaboration with students, parents, school districts and community agencies to maintain communication, provide quality services, and ensure the provision of appropriate resources which support the education of all students with disabilities. Today, as never before, it is essential that parents, students and staff work together to make certain that the appropriate services are provided on an individualized basis for every child with a disability.

Activities to Support ELA Read with your child: Both Fiction & Nonfiction Read aloud as your child reads aloud Ask questions about how things are the same and different Ask them to describe key characters or topics Ask them to show you where in the text they found that information Read more than one version of the same story or topic. Have them describe what is the same and what is different

Strategies to Support Word Problems Part Whole

Part-Part-Whole Supports problem solving to find where you started (X), what changed (Y), or what you end with (Z). X +/- Y = Z Ask questions about the problem before attempting to solve: What are they asking you to find? What would you need to know? Do you have the information to find your answer?

Integrated Activities Baking from a recipe (with supervision) Have your child read the entire recipe first Have your child summarize the process Ask your child to collect and measure the ingredients For older children, ask them to bake a fractional batch of cookies. “Follow this recipe but cut all the ingredients in half”

More Integrated Activities Some Assembling is Required Have your child read you the instruction and have them carry out the instructions when appropriate

More Integrated Activities For older children, have your child assist you in paying the bills by asking them to find the amount owed and help with the calculations when balancing your checkbook. Create a pie chart of your monthly expenses. Have your child help you create a budget for their birthday party, create a list of items to buy and an action plan of things to do
