Recap on the CV system The Heart is a pump, which pushes blood throughout many blood vessels in the body Blood being pushed around the body has 2 main functions To supply the body with oxygen Remove waste products such as carbon dioxide Blood vessels run throughout the body to allow blood to travel everywhere
Regular Exercise and the Cardio Vascular System Decreased resting Heart Rate Heart rate recovery rate improves Increased stroke volume (amount of blood pumped per beat) Better Cardiac output (amount of blood ejected from the heart each minute) Reduced blood pressure Healthy veins and arteries
Three types of muscles INVOLUNTARY MUSCLE: Is found in the body's internal organs. It is called involuntary as it is not under our conscious control.
CARDIAC MUSCLE Is found only in the heart. It is also an involuntary muscle and it never stops working until we die. It pumps blood from the heart around the body
VOLUNTARY MUSCLES Also known as skeletal muscles These muscles are under our conscious control, and is the type of muscle that makes us move
How voluntary muscles work Voluntary muscles produce movement by contracting and relaxing They get shorter when they contract and longer when they relax again Voluntary muscles are attached to the bone by tendons
EXAMPLE Muscular contractions shorten the muscle Bicep bends the elbow Bicep shortens Tricep relaxes and lengthens
The immediate effects of exercise on the muscular system Exercise increases the bodies demand for oxygen and glycogen- the muscles need more fuel to function Extra waste products are created when the muscles work hard- demand for more blood to remove waste products It is possible for the muscles to work aerobically for a long period of time, but when the demand becomes to great lactic acid builds up leading to cramp
