Jan. 12 Bellwork Symbol Allusion Allegory Irony Paradox Flashback Directions: Define the following LITERARY TERMS in your own words but then leave a line to write the actual meaning if necessary. Symbol Allusion Allegory Irony Paradox Flashback foreshadowing

Symbol = an object that represents a deeper meaning to its own surface/literal meaning Allusion = a reference in one literary work to another literary work, history, myth or popular culture Examples = “When she lost her job, she acted like a Scrooge, and refused to buy anything that wasn’t necessary.” Scrooge was an extremely stingy character from Charles Dickens’, A Christmas Carol. “He was a real Romeo with the ladies.” Romeo was a character in Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, and was very romantic in expressing his love for Juliet. Allegory = literary work with two or more levels of meaning, all key elements are symbolic Irony = Irony can best be defined as that middle ground between what is said and what is meant, or others’ understanding of what was said and what was meant. Paradox= statement that implies a contradiction, but that actually presents truth. Example Nobody goes to that restaurant because it is too crowded. I'm nobody. JUMBO SHRIMP Flashback = section of literary work interrupting the time order sequence to relate in event from an earlier time. Foreshadowing = clues that hint at events to come.
